Great common sense guide to good health,
By Jeff Macauley (Phoenix, Arizona) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Guide to Contented Hearts: Cardiac Risk Management : Cholesterol, High Blood Pressure Exercise, Stress, Weight, Diet (Paperback)
This easy to read primer is full of solid information that I'm finding very helpful as I adopt a healthier lifestyle. The quizzes were real eye openers and pointed up areas where I needed to pay attention. As follow-up, the author offers manageable ways to improve diet and exercise that are very easy to implement into my daily routine. I haven't tried all the recipes yet, but I really loved the Broiled Orange Roughy. At first I felt a little silly doing some of the stretches at work, but they really make a difference in the way I feel. This is a good common sense book.

A co-worker of mine recommended this book to me and I'm glad she did, because I found it quite informative and enjoyable. It's very reader-friendly. The text and ideas are easy to follow, they have a real flow. I particularly enjoyed the three case studies. They showed, in a very real way, how stress affects people from all walks of life. The Lifestyle Quiz, too, was a real help. I'm not sure I know of another of its kind. I recommend this book to people who have an interest in changing their lifestyles for the better. This book has a very warm, human approach. It definitely stands out.

Information that does NO wrong....,
This review is from: Guide to Contented Hearts: Cardiac Risk Management : Cholesterol, High Blood Pressure Exercise, Stress, Weight, Diet (Paperback)
Self-Help books are often a dime a dozen, with as many coming at you as there are day in the year. But what is different about Contented Hearts is that it is very readable to someone who is not well versed in self help books. A book that does not bombard you with technical terms but does actually inform you on the subject is a good buy, especially when the information could just prolong your life.

It's an easy-to-understand handbook that can put you on track to a heart-healthy lifestyle. Both my wife and I are following this book's simple guidelines. I'm sure that the indispensible advice we learned will add years to our lives.

For anyone who is even remotely concerned with the effects their lifestyle might be having on their health, this book is a must have. Its quantitative approach to determining health risks and showing how small changes in lifestyle can promote huge positive changes in health is a real eye-opener. The simple, non-technical approach makes it an extremely approachable guide to improving your health and reducing the risks that may affect your health in the future.

Too basic for most readers,

This review is from: Guide to Contented Hearts: Cardiac Risk Management : Cholesterol, High Blood Pressure Exercise, Stress, Weight, Diet (Paperback)
_Contented Hearts_ is meant as a companion workbook for a corporate health program. It's filled with questionaires and cartoons. It reads like a federal brochure for children's education. I was recently diagnosed with high cholesterol, found this book after an online search, and was very disapointed at its skimpy content and lack of serious discussion on an important topic.

Lightweight content for a serious problem,
By A Customer
This review is from: Guide to Contented Hearts: Cardiac Risk Management : Cholesterol, High Blood Pressure Exercise, Stress, Weight, Diet (Paperback)
_Contented Hearts_ is essentially a workbook for a corporate health class. There's very little substance in the book. It's mostly a Q&A geared towards lifestyle changes and stress management. Most of the pages are filled with cartoons, menu diaries, weight charts, and questionaires. There's almost no new information on the topic. At $19.95, it's overpriced. I was very disappointed in the content and would've never bought the book if I'd seen it before purchasing.
