Nice companion for Miller's Anatomy of the Dog,
By Erin (Starkville, MS) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Guide to the Dissection of the Dog, 5e (Hardcover)
Overall, I found this to be an excellent book for small animal (technically dog only) gross anatomy. I say small animal, but I find myself referring to this text even when studying large animal anatomy. Reason--I like how the text very clearly indicates proximal and distal muscle attachments for all major muscles and specific nervous and arterial supply to all major muscles. The pictures and diagrams are decent, but all in black and white. I found it helpful to color in structures in the book as I dissected that specific part of the animal. I didn't find the text as boring as other reviewers have. True, the subject matter is tedious, but this book gets right to the point. Paradoxally, that is also while I gave this book 4 stars instead of 5. A lot of the detail is missing. I suggest having a copy of Miller's Anatomy of the Dog to go with this dissection guide. Highly recommended!

This book has good information, however the diagrams get confusing, and I found myself flipping through numerous pages to find references to diagrams in the text.

Excellent Laboratory Guide,

This book was very helpful in first year anatomy. My copy has been highlighted and color penciled to death. As many reviewers have pointed out, this book is tough to read. The book is so condensed, making it highly portable, but not a comprehensive overview of anatomy. Anatomy has its own language, one that is very difficult to just jump into. This language barrier makes reading the text tedious and very tough to orient yourself without instructor help. The book is excellent; however, NOTHING can substitute for excellent instructors and many hours in the laboratory.

This book is really helpful in low to medium level of veterinary anatomy. It is easy for begniners to look and find, but professionals might want something else...I still think it is a great book.

BEST dog dissection book,
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Guide to the Dissection of the Dog, 7e (Hardcover)
I bought this book for 1st year vet anatomy. It is required for the course, as it is the dissection guide. It is easy to follow and has excellent reference pictures. In this most recent edition, they are in color for the first time. I personally find gross dissection pictures more useful as a study reference, but these hand-drawn pics are just fine for locating things in antonym laboratory. I would recommend it for any vet student whose anat lab does not already have it as a required text. It has also been in the reference library of nearly every clinic I have worked it, so it is a useful reference that you will want to hold onto!

This was the required dog dissection guide for my Gross Anatomy class last year. The diagrams are nice, the information is good, and it is a useful quick reference tool. However, the dissection instructions are tedious and hard to understand at times (read them carefully). Overall I would recommend this book. If you want more detailed information on animal anatomy, then you need to buy a full textbook.

Helpful for a starting guide,

Really great start to dog dissection but if you want a more in-depth analysis that is also less travel friendly, go for the larger version of this book.

Excellent for veterinary students.,

I am a current veterinary student and this book is a necessary reference for small animal anatomy courses. It is very informative and covers all of the anatomy of the dog. Most diagrams are from the more expensive Millers Anatomy of the Dog.

Pros: It is easy to read, not incredibly boring, when it provides good information, it does so in an easy to understand way.
Cons: Contradictory information, the steps are not well organized, sometimes you cut through muscle you later find out you should have saved. |
