Book Description

January 22, 2007
Guide Dogs and Guns: America s First Blind Marksman Fires Back You watched me rack my AK-47 in Bowling for Columbine . You saw me square off with The Early Show's Bryant Gumble. You looked on as I entered the ring to spar with MSNBC's Tucker Carlson. You read about me in The National Enquirer, the Washington Post and the New York Times, but through it all the complete story was never told. Until now. Finally, it's my turn and the gloves are off. Ever since I passed the written and shooting exams in my home state of North Dakota to get my concealed weapons permit in 2001, I have been a figure in the national gun debate. Although it might be true that I could be the greatest threat to the Second Amendment as others have suggested, I stand alone and I do not bow to pressure from either side of the issue. My shooting ability is well-documented and is undeniable, so prepare to step into a world filled with Braille, machineguns, nuclear weapons, sailing ships, killer whales and tornadoes. This isn't a soft, blind man conquers all type of fluff biography, but it is a hard hitting, bare knuckles, although at times humorous, look into the life of America's first sightless gun slinger, Carey McWilliams.

About the Author

Carey McWilliams Carey McWilliams lives in Fargo, ND with his wife, Victoria, his retired guide dogs, Tariff and Delbert, and their cat, Midnight. Blinded by age ten due to a late-blooming birth defect, he was forced to break through the roadblocks that both his blindness and poverty created. In spite of this, as a teenager, he joined an USAF cadet's auxiliary at the tail end of the Cold War. There he had the opportunity to co-pilot many small aircraft and taste military life at the rattling of an M-16. Before exploring the undersea world of whales, he finished his training with weapons through an Army ROTC Pistol Marksmanship course from which he received a perfect score. Carey completed his Masters of Mass Communication and his Bachelors in University Studies with minors in Biology, English, Mass Communication and Veterinary Science. He is also an accomplished scuba diver and enjoys writing science fiction/horror. Not bad for a man who, when born was prevented from leaving the hospital until his mom put down a deposit and arranged a payment schedule.

5.0 out of 5 stars Honest book, August 25, 2011
By
Tori (North Dakota) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Guide Dogs and Guns (Paperback)
As Carey McWilliams' wife, I would like to state that the previous reviewer has no way of knowing who he or she was within the book because Carey didn't use real names of anyone he wrote about except immediate family in some cases. So whatever he or she read must have been true if he or she recognized his or herself. The book took three years to piece together and we painstaking made sure that everything within its pages is verifable. I really like the book and it's not because I'm his wife, it's because it talks about what blindness is really like, how guide dogs really work and some of the challenges disabled individuals really face.

1.0 out of 5 stars Review of Guide Dogs and Guns, February 23, 2011
This review is from: Guide Dogs and Guns (Paperback)
As one of the unfortunate people who was inaccurately portrayed in this book, I must caution readers about its overall veracity. Mr. McWilliams goes beyond mere interpretation of events, and ventures soundly into the realm of blatant falsehood. He describes himself as an emotionally battered victem, while carefully omitting his own role as a liar and a manipulator. As someone who advocates for the equal treatment of persons with disabilities, I do not object to a blind individual's right to carry a weapon that he or she has been trained to safely use. My objection is in the lack of appropriate psychological screening that must exist in the state that has allowed Mr. McWilliams to carry a weapon. In short: if you're looking for a tabloid-style narrative that appears to have been written from a bitter and vengeful vantage point, this is the book for you. Just don't believe everything you read.
