I am a 69 yr. old caregiver. I provide care for my 99 yr. old father who lives nearby, my 44 yr. old developmentally delayed son, and his 17 yr. old son, (my grandson), who live in another state. When people talk about the sandwich generation - I am a club sandwich. It is impossible to find the right combination of words to describe the loneliness, the panic, the frustration and downright anger that I experience, often on a daily basis, when dealing with the needs of these 3 people. A GUIDE FOR CAREGIVERS is a life line. It reminds me that I am not the only person trying to survive in what often feels like drowning situations. The chapter on grieving calls to me, but I am afraid to go there. It feels like a bottomless pit from which I will not be able to escape. I find myself reaching for the book and turning to dog-eared pages to give myself a time out and to gather strength from the comments that others have so willingly shared. Reading the chapter on Burnout and Accidie was the first time that I felt someone truly understood me and the Guide For Caregivers cocktail of feelings that seem to always be swirling inside of me. My synagogue recently formed a support group for caregivers and I am going to suggest that we read and do the workbook together. I look forward to visiting the website and participating in the online discussions related to caregiving.

For a number of years, I have been involved in teaching adults how to provide pastoral care to others and to deliberately discover ways by which they, as caregivers, can practice self-care, moving them ever closer to their own healing and wholeness. The most difficult aspect of that training is to convince them of the importance of self-care in a way that brings to the surface a self-awareness that allows them to be able to nurture the care of other caregivers. Benjamin Pratt's book offers an interactive book that I can use in the classroom and in other small group environments as a way of encouraging a special understanding of the needs of the caregiver, whether it is self or another.
This book is also set up in a way that extremely user friendly---in short sections and with comments and text within which any one of us who has been in a caregiving environment can identify. The reflection questions really hit all the right notes, in terms of beginning to understand self as caregiver and the effects of that role; it also provides the gentle nudges that help to identify the things that might get in the way of caregiving. A Guide for Caregivers is a valuable tool in this work of caregiving. Thank you, Dr. Pratt, for your insights and food for the journey.

Ben Pratt's excellent book gives repeats some traditional steps about Caregiving but takes the subject further into the whole being and spiritual dimensions. Combining his experience as a Methodist minister and pastoral counselor, his knowledge of psychology and his personal story as a caregiver for his wife, Ben Pratt makes his book both practical (each chapter includes space for journaling or questions which can be used in a journal and creative. Filled with both anecdotal information and spiritual insights of interdenominational origin, this book makes a great gift and bedside companion to those who are struggling with repeated caregiving chores and questions.

Both of us served as caregivers for our former spouses -- each of whom died after fairly short, but severe illnesses. If we had read Benjamin Pratt's book during our caregiving months, we each would have coped better and felt more-equipped to serve. However, we're pleased many others in our circumstances now can receive help and comfort -- as they go about the overwhelming task of providing as much care and love as possible to a terminally ill family member.

I purchased this book for an extended family member who is the sole caretaker of his wife, and it is the perfect tool for anyone going through this uniquely difficult situation. When it seems as though the weight of the world is on someone's shoulders, this book can be their refuge. Everyone needs support, and this author not only gives advice and helpful comfort as someone who has "been there," but allows the reader to fill in thoughts and feelings in the journal spaces provided. A much-needed resource has arrived.
