Written in clear, understandable terms, Firefly Guide to Global Hazards is essential reading for anyone interested in or concerned about the environment, geophysics and political affairs. The book provides concise descriptions of all types of hazards and the threats they pose.

Some of the global hazards covered are:

  • Earthquakes, volcanoes, fires
  • Flooding, coastal erosion, tsunami
  • Hurricanes, tornadoes, winds

The book uses case histories to explain the causes, effects and some of the solutions for each hazard or disaster. Illustrated with 200 color photographs and drawings and more than 100 maps, charts, tables and diagrams, this book is an encyclopedia for the curious and the concerned.

4.0 out of 5 stars Nicely detailed encyclopedia of disasters but type too small., September 13, 2008

This review is from: Guide to Global Hazards (Firefly Pocket series) (Paperback)
This is a very well-written encyclopedia-style reference book describing most kinds of major disasters. The one glaring ommission only partially covered by other topics is FAMINE! One of the oldest calamities of human existence since the Neolithic revolution. Other than that, this reference book is quite thorough for a layman's guide to disasters. The only big problem is the format of this Firefly version is too tiny. Lots of pictures too small to really see much, and the small print too hard to read, especially for a reference book. I don't know if the previous Philips edition might be a little bigger. I will try it and see.
