In today's fast-pace world, it seems impossible to totally avoid fast food, no matter how much I would like to. Whether rushing to out-of-town football games after work or helping my son with a school project, I sometimes find myself with only two choices ... eat fast food or don't eat at all. Sound familiar to anyone?

Guide to Healthy Fast-Food Eating to the rescue! This second edition book, endorsed by the American Diabetes Association, will help you make smarter choices when fast food is your only option. While helpful for everyone, this book should be in every diabetic's pocket (or pocketbook). In addition to nutrition facts for the most popular fast-food restaurants in America, this book provides tips for diabetes-related dining dilemmas. I wish we would have had it two years ago, when my dad (a 50 year diabetic) passed out cold in a restaurant because he had administered his diabetes medication too long before our meal. Tips for prevention of these sorts of disasters are included in the chapter, Restaurant Dilemmas and Diabetes.

In each of the chapters offering food selections at thirteen different restaurants, the author gives us the "light and lean" choice, as well as the "healthy `n' hearty" choice. Evaluated on calories, percent of calories from fat, total milligrams of cholesterol, and total milligrams of sodium, the difference between the two lies in the calories. "Healthiest Bets" are marked with a checkmark. A chart of selections gives you the "skinny" on anything else you'd like to know about, such as amounts of saturated fat, sodium, total fat, and exchanges.

If you're like me, and you sometimes have to make a choice between no food or fast food, this book belongs in your handbag or briefcase, right beside your copy of Eat This, Not That.

This is a very good book, and it has guided me in finding healthy choices in fast food places. But it might be better to just get the guide to healthy restuarant eating. That one is more thourough.

I purchased this product for my father, a stubborn man in his ways, who was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes more than half a decade ago. I finally got fed up with his eating & exercise habits, so I purchased this book for him, among others, to hopefully at least make him aware of what he is doing to his body and health. His work and lifestyle makes eating out a regular affair and, more often than not, he ends up heading for the fast food chains. I am pleased to say that, along with Diabetic counseling/education for both my parents at the local hospital and completely reinventing their kitchen pantry & fridge, my father has used this book and been surprised to learn what he is consuming each time he heads for the drive-thru. Although hitting up a fast food joint for a quick meal is still somewhat commonplace for him, he now chooses alternatives that meet his carb and sugar levels, etc...My father has lost almost 50 lbs in the last two years and sustained a balanced weight. I know this book was not a cure or solely responsible for his improved healthy habits, but it is definitely a significant educator, especially for those who find themselves seeking out fast food meals on a regular basis.

My only suggestion is that with the increased awareness of diabetes, obesity, etc being connected with fast food in the media and chains striving to add new "healthier" options to their menus, I think it is important that this guide be updated to incorporate those additions so people can know whether a "healthier" choice advertised is in fact a good option to meet their diabetic needs.

Overall I thought this book was pretty light on the information. Not many restaurants. I found that their suggested meals often weren't the healthiest choices.
