Editorial Reviews

Review

"This book is comprehensive, students like to read it, color enhancements are great. This is a textbook first and then can be used as a reference later."

"It covers all essential materials for preparing for the A+ exams. Having all material in a combo book makes my teaching job lots easier."

"It's well-written, has good review questions, and good instructor resources. Also, the CertBlaster test prep exams from Student Downloads are an excellent resource."

"I like the step by step approach with complete images. This means that in lecture I can easily brush past these section and give shorter demonstrations because the text covers the material so well. I like the detail on other OSes in the appendix. The hands-on exercises provide the starting point for great labs without having to purchase an additional book."

"I love the fact that the software and hardware texts are complementary. When students take the sequence with me it feels almost like a year long course rather than two disconnected courses. There is enough in common between software and hardware texts that students feel totally comfortable with the 2nd text at the start but there really isn't much useless overlap between the two that it feels like a "rerun". The texts are written such that a complete beginner to the subject can understand yet the more experienced students learn as well. Great balance!"

I purchased this book for my ECT 372 class for my IT major. I already have my A+ certification but my major says i had to take this class. This book is one of the best textbooks ive ever used. Its going on my shelf along with my Grobbs Electronic books. The information in there is fairly recent (thus only a 4 star rating). Theres not much stuff in there about windows 7. The only other complaint I have with this book is the weight. Its the heaviest textbook I have ever used. Its 7 pounds and you can feel the weight. Though it has plenty of pictures and info in it so its worth the weight. Even if your not in college and are interested in computers, get this book, youll be able to fix most problems that arise with computers.

I have been in the PC and compatible hardware and software industry since 1983. I basically trained mnyself and now thought it would be important to (1) verify what I have learned and (2) get the A+ Cerification for later use in a college atmosphere, as in insturctor. The book is an excellent visual source of past and present technology providing great color photos with detailed explanations on each. Considering the technology area changes daily, it is one of the most updated books I have found so far out there. The local college uses the 4th edition as referenece in their continuing edition classes.
Appendix A covers A+ Acronyms normally used in the trade, while Appendix B covers Windows shortcut key combinations that are very useful when a mouse is not available. With the additon of the detailed Glossary and the CD add-on, you have an excellent reference source of what's required for the A+ Certification exams.

I'm using this book as part of a certification course designed to prepare me to take the CompTIA A+ 700 series exams. This book has some major points in it's favor -

1. Color pictures.

2. Step-by-step instructions. We call them the "no-brainers".

3. How-to lists that show you common problems and basically just about every step you can take to try to solve them.

I only rate this book at 4 instead of 5 stars because we've encountered an inaccuracy. On page 409, Jean Andrews suggests that you buy an interlaced monitor because reduces eye strain. Actually, it's the opposite - an interlaced monitor essentially puts two pictures on the screen at the same time, doubling eye strain. When possible you should always use a non-interlaced monitor - they are better for your eyes, not vice versa.

I passed the 701 and 702 last week.
I used this book for my college class, as the main study guide.
This book is good for a general understanding of the way computers work. The 3 objectives to impart knowledge, to prepare for the A+ Certification and to have teaching materials for the class are overly stretching. It would have been better to separate this book to 2 or 3 books, it will be also easier to carry the book around.
The subjects are overly worded; one diagram is worth 100 words.
There is too much repetitions of the same subjects in the book.
There is a tendency to jump quickly into specifics, and there is not enough overview and connections between the different parts.
So DO NOT rely only on this book to pass the tests and read the book three times at list.

I have to use this book for my OS and Hardware class and it gives great indepth information. I haven't used the CD yet, but the book itself is really all you need for the written part of the A+ Certification. After reading this, I know more than I've ever known and it was fun for me to read and learn. If you want to build a PC, which I'll happily do once I finish reading, this is a great book for you. It tells you just about everything you need to know about the basics to build and maintain your computer. The only draw back is that it's HUGE, but with how much information is in it, nothing you can do about that except not drop it on your foot.

Instead of putting information succinctly in an easy to read Part A, Part B, Part C way that is easier to study and remember, Ms. Andrews jumps around. She introduces concepts, then switches to another topic, then back for a bit to the things she originally introduced, then on to something else and back again.

It's like ADD for geeks... Geeze lady. FOCUS!

I am really enjoying this book and all that it has to offer. I have been an IS tech for years, but with this industry, you cannot know it all...This book is answering many of the questions I wanted answered. It has explanations and reliable resources. I have not taken my A+ exam yet, but am confident I'll pass; and have a wealth of information for my employmant! Very nice!
