A good basic introduction and overview of several martial art systems.,

The large (9 by 12) hardcover book was written in 1997 but it is still a good introductory text on the basic elements of several popular martial arts. The text is broken down into five parts.Part one covers Taekwondo and even though this volume us supposed to be merely an introduction to the art, it shows numerous jumping techniques which are clearly advanced movements. Part two explains the sport of judo and shows several basic falling and throwing techniques of this art. Part three deals with the basics of ju-jitsu, showing various self-defense techniques of that system of combat. Part four covers karate basic techniques taken from the Shotokan karate system. The final part gives an overview of the Chinese Kung Fu system of self-defense. There is also a short section of the terms used in this book. This book also has an index. In conclusion, this book would be of interest to anyone who desires to learn the basic principles of numerous self-defense, sport and combat systems. It is not a comprehensive study of any of these martial arts, but rather an overview approach to the subjects. Rating: 4 Stars Joseph J. This book is great for beginners. An excellent introduction to some of the basic techniques im martial arts. A must have for all beginners. Written excellently.
