4.0 out of 5 stars Good overview of the basics
This book provides a good overview of the basics. The first section has maps of MN first frost, last frost, and hardiness zones, list of MN County extension phone numbers, and information on dealing with typical MN soils. The next section is broken out by specific vegetables/fruits, and includes information on when, where, and how to plant each one, notes on when to...

2.0 out of 5 stars Generic Gardening Guide
Except for a bit of Minnesota-specific information in the first part of the book - this is a completely generic guide to gardening. If you search amazon you'll see that the author has several other "state-specific" gardening books that have the same cover and table of contents.

This review is from: Guide to Minnesota Vegetable Gardening (Vegetable Gardening Guides) (Paperback)

Save your money and buy a *good* all around guide to gardening and look up free information from the UMN extension. Or - if you really think you *need* a book about gardening in Minnesota look at the books by Melinda Myers or Don Engebretson; both well-known folks in the upper midwest gardening world.

The first section has maps of MN first frost, last frost, and hardiness zones, list of MN County extension phone numbers, and information on dealing with typical MN soils. The next section is broken out by specific vegetables/fruits, and includes information on when, where, and how to plant each one, notes on when to tell if each vegetable or fruit is ripe, and a list of common varieties to try. (Note, this is not a book for organic gardeners, every listing includes what pesticides to use for pests specific to each plant. If you need organic methods you'll need to look elsewhere.) Overall a good starter book with information specific to this cold but fertile land in which we live.

1.0 out of 5 stars Not really about Minnesota, and definitely not for the organic gardener, June 30, 2014
This review is from: Guide to Minnesota Vegetable Gardening (Vegetable Gardening Guides) (Paperback)
A book that goes on and on about how it is going to provide information on gardening in Minnesota ought to at least edit out the chapters on growing peach trees and blackberries and should heavily modify the advice on blueberries, cherries, and apples to reflect that many varieties are unsuited to Minnesota's cold climate. There's a lot of emphasis on poisons and fertilizer, with little discussion of safe handling and no mention of alternative strategies for pest control. And where was the editor when the author kept writing about "healing in" plants, instead of "heeling in"?
