The MySQL database has become the world's most popular open source database because of its consistent fast performance, high reliability, and ease of use. That's why best-selling authors Phil Pratt and Mary Last are pleased to introduce their latest database textbook - A Guide to MySQL. This straightforward text utilizes three case databases - Premiere Products, Henry Books, and Alexamara Marina Group - to teach the concepts and techniques of using MySQL. Your students will gain the skills to build professional quality MySQL databases, thanks to this real-world approach. Additional hands-on exercises at the end of each chapter offer students the opportunity to problem-solve based on what they've previously learned.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great Reference, August 16, 2007

This review is from: A Guide to MySQL (Sam 2010 Compatible Products) (Paperback)
This is a great reference book. I have used this book in college frequently and am still using it in the work place. Easy to follow, organized very well, great examples. If you need a reference book this would be a good choice.

1.0 out of 5 stars Poor curriculum, poor reference for future use., December 13, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: A Guide to MySQL (Sam 2010 Compatible Products) (Paperback)
This book is poorly constructed, and is a disservice to anyone that wishes to learn about MySQL. The authors appear to be more concerned with making you remember and recall the particulars of the imaginary companies (Henry Books, Premiere Products, Alexamara Marina) that they have created than actually teaching the material.

The index at the back of the book is atrocious. Attempting to relocate critical information in this book is an exercise in frustration. It appears that they attempted to save paper by providing an incomplete index which is in no way representative of all of the features of MySQL.

The accompanying curriculum to this book is also very poor.

I ended up bringing an alternate book to class (MySQL (4th Edition) [Paperback] by Paul DuBois (Author), ISBN 0672329387) to find specific functions or reference when other students had questions that the textbook was unable to address.

This book does have one positive quality. It is very light (288 pages) compared to the aforementioned comprehensive 1224 page book that I prefer. However, I ended up having to carry them both to class, making the weight savings irrelevant.

4.0 out of 5 stars Textbook Keeper, October 15, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: A Guide to MySQL (Sam 2010 Compatible Products) (Paperback)
I'm using this textbook for a MySQL course and it is definitely a keeper! If you are just starting out with it it's a good book but it is also worthwhile for those just wanting a reference. It follows three companies throughout the book, with exercises for each database at the end of each chapter which allows you to practice what you learned reading.
