From Booklist
This nonevaluative, unannotated compilation is the result of two years of graduate work in ethnomusicology by the author and is an attempt to provide access to the rich and diverse field of commercially available music by U.S. and Canadian Native American composers and performers. It is divided into three sections: "Traditional Tribal Music," "Intertribal Music," and "Crossover Music Styles." Each section is arranged by recording company; sometimes the list of recordings under a company is arranged by title (if there are various artists) and sometimes by performer. At any rate, each entry indicates the catalog or order number and format and the date of release, if known. "Crossover Music Styles" divides the recordings into 20 broad categories--adult acoustic, blues, children's, etc.--and then uses the same arrangement as the other two sections, by recording-company name. Most of the recordings seem to be from the late 1960s through 1994, although many entries do not note the date.
The main body of the book is followed by a list of record companies and distributors with addresses and phone numbers. There is also an index to performers, titles, tribal groups, recording companies, and the 20 categories from section 3. The index is helpful, but unfortunately it doesn't ignore articles at the beginning of titles, so if a recording title begins with the, it is indexed under that word.
This useful compilation will provide public and academic libraries with collections of Native American materials access to music in cassette or CD formats. --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.
