Book Description

Guide to New York City Landmarks December 3, 2008
The official guide to New York's must-see buildings

Yes, it's a wonderful town, and this book gives you more than 1,200 reasons why. With a host of new landmarks, 80 two-color, easy-to-read maps, and more than 200 photographs, this new edition of the official and only complete guide to New York's landmarks will make every visitor feel like a native--and turn every native into a wide-eyed tourist. New to this edition are more than 75 recently designated landmarks and 10 new historic districts, with a new focus on neighborhoods with local history and details explaining some of the more remarkable buildings in the districts. Includes a Foreword by Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg.

The New York City Landmarks Preservation Commission is the New York City agency responsible for protecting and preserving New York City's architecturally, historically, and culturally significant buildings. Founded in 1965 after the destruction of the original Penn Station, the Commission consists of 11 commissioners, including at least three architects, a historian, a realtor, a planner or landscape architect, as well as a representative of each borough.

Editorial Reviews

Review

"The recognition of Queens neighborhoods, incidentally, is one of the notable changes in the fourth edition of the Guide to New York City Landmarks….the new edition treats Queens as it should, just like the rest of the city. Graphically, this is a small change, but it is these and other enhancements to this frequently updated guide that make it worthwhile." (The Architect's Newspaper, June 3, 2009)

From the Back Cover

"New York's lifeblood is its landmarks—its historic neighborhoods, its incomparable buildings, its distinctive streets. This book will guide you through the extraordinary places that make New York New York."
—Paul Goldberger

4.0 out of 5 stars NY Landmarks, January 14, 2009
This review is from: Guide to New York City Landmarks (Paperback)
An excellent guide to the many landmarked buildings and city districts deemed valuable to NYC by it's own Landmark Commission.
On my next visit to the City,I'll be carrying this book around with me as I seek out special buildings in the vast architectural landscape of New York City.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent guide; the best out there., July 16, 2010

This review is from: Guide to New York City Landmarks (Paperback)
Really great guide that includes descriptions of individual buildings and historic districts.
My only quibbles are that it doesn't have suggested walks and, on a few maps, "notable structures" are designated with the letters while individual landmarks are designated with numbers. As a result you have to go back and forth between different lists for adjacent buildings.
Much more comprehensive than the MASNYC "10 Architectural Walks in Manhattan."
