Practical "How To" Book of Orthodox Christian Practice, May 28, 2004
By A Customer
This review is from: A Guide to Orthodox Life: Some Beliefs, Customs, and Traditions of the Church (Mass Market Paperback)
This book is so helpful to those seriously seeking a true Orthodox Christian lifestyle! It has information on how to live day to day life as an Orthodox Christian with regards to prayer, fasting, money, creating an Orthodox atmosphere in the home, church etiquette, etc. Basically, the book prepares the reader on what is expected from him/her as an Orthodox Christian and how to cultivate an Orthodox mindset in the midst of the secular world's influence and antithetical/anti-Christian influence. It is truly a valuable tool for those just beginning in Orthodoxy, as well as those already Orthodox that wish to deepen the practice of their faith that may not know all of the "why's", and is quite an easy read.

This review is from: A Guide to Orthodox Life: Some Beliefs, Customs, and Traditions of the Church (Mass Market Paperback)
My Orthodox parish is not Old Calendarist, but most of these guidelines
are applicable to all practicing Orthodox everywhere. The only book that
comes close is The Orthodox Companion, which was first published in the
1950s and which assumes that most of the people around you (family, friends,
neighbors) are also Orthodox. This book makes no such assumptions and is
full of practical advice when it comes to fasting and praying -- as well
as little-discussed subjects such as the Orthodox attitude to money and
etiquette when visiting a monastery. A must for the practicing Orthodox!
