YA Most libraries owning a Webster's New Geographical Dictionary (Merriam-Webster, 1984) and a set of encyclopedias can supply the essential facts about cities and countries of the world. What is unique about this new geographical reference source, containing nearly 8,000 entries, is that it has a lively writing style that resembles a weekly news magazine rather than an encyclopedia or a dictionary. Lavish photographs and charts are above average and sure to capture the interest of readers. The inclusion of man-made wonders such as skyscrapers and tunnels along with geographical features is a useful and unusual feature. ``Day in the Life'' vignettes of people around the world are also sprinkled throughout the book. Major countries receive from three to five pages of coverage and cities a paragraph or two. Historical coverage extends through late 1986. The sociology and customs of major countries are strong points of coverage. Webster's . . . , with nearly 47,000 entries, remains an essential geographical source, but Guide to Places of the World is a welcome addition, highly browsable and enjoyable.
