Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

Denizens of pork country often say that the odor of pig excrement is the smell of money, and, sure enough, Klober does, too, though not until page 25. Initially complaining that "of all the major livestock species, none is more misunderstood . . . than the hog," Klober strives to remedy that situation with positive thinking, wry humor, and such pictures as those of a half-skinned carcass and of a hog with a particularly "feminine appearance." The former, by the way, is a highlight of the book's do-it-yourself aspect, included to illustrate home butchering technique but also part of what makes this a handy resource for those considering pork production. Besides crisp writing, ample illustration, and broad, matter-of-fact coverage, Klober offers a surprising glossary (it includes libido, which means what you think it does, and mummies, which are "partially absorbed embryos"). A great starter book for the new or hobby farmer and an entertaining one for the mildly curious. Mike Tribby

First time my son has raised a pig for FFA. We are total novices. This book explains everything in simple terms that are easy to understand. I would recommend this book to any first time FFA or 4H member working his or her way through pig-rearing. Definitely worth the money... and then some!
