1.0 out of 5 stars Rip Off
This book is a complete rip off. It's a tiny paperback with "fluff" note pages inserted to bulk it up. The information is very basic. There's no way it's worth $50!

5.0 out of 5 stars Guyer's on the money, May 18, 2000

Evan G. Bane (Glendale, WI USA) - See all my reviews
A seasoned pol once said that "Getting the vote is 10 percent access and 90 percent heat."

Frankly, what Bob Guyer's guidebook doesn't teach is what it can't teach - building personal connections with legislators to gain access. For everything else, Bob has written a complete and carefully thoughtout guide to preparing and successfully steering legislation. In other words, bringing the "heat."

He doesn't offer all the answers, since the nuances of each bill and state legislature prohibit a cookie-cutter approach. Instead, Guyer asks, and gets you to ask, the right questions to guide your bill writing, lobbying team organization and strategic plan.

His many years of experience are condensed into a book that reveals the secrets of the temple.

5.0 out of 5 stars Talking to Lawmakers, October 5, 2001
By A Customer
The Guide shows that speaking to lawmakers is about 10 percent of what it takes to win their votes. It reveals, and shows readers how to do, the other 90 percent of activities that are 'behind the scenes' but make all the difference between winning in the legislature and just talking to lawmakers.

5.0 out of 5 stars Must Read, August 3, 2009
This review is from: Guide to State Legislative Lobbying, Revised Edition (Paperback)
"I am currently a freshman at the University of South Florida St. Petersburg. I read Robert Guyer's book: A Guide To State Legislative Lobbying to fulfill some of my questions on lobbying. My aunt and uncle are environmental lobbyists in D.C. so I am somewhat familiar with the issues and what lobbying is all about. Robert Guyer could not have done a better job capturing what lobbying means and what it takes to be a lobbyist. This book is filled with historical references as well as modern day examples. This was a sound investment and I am thrilled to have read it. I would recommend this book to two types of people: anyone who is curious about what a lobbyist is or does and anyone who is a lobbyist and wants to learn more!" -- T.J. Ewin, student at USF, founder and former president of Creighton Prep Teenage Republicans, member of Project Extra Mile

5.0 out of 5 stars Essential Information, February 17, 2005
This review is from: Guide to State Legislative Lobbying, Revised Edition (Paperback)
Consider this Legislative Lobbying 101. Robert Guyer's Guide to State Legislative Lobbying is as practical and informative a guide to the fundamentals of successful legislative lobbying as you are likely to find. And it's packed into cogent, readable chapters. The straightforward, accessible narrative carefully describes the major legislative procedures, political tactics and strategic choices confronting any modern lobbyist or advocacy group attempting to achieve visibility and influence in state legislative policymaking. The candid discussion constitutes a practical education in the legislative process especially useful to policy advocates new to legislative decisionmaking, but there's plenty of helpful information for anyone who wants to understand how policy is actually made in legislative chambers. In addition to thoughtful tactical advice, the book is especially valuable in leading the reader through the labyrinth of the formal legislative process which can easily intimidate and confound the uninitiated. The book is a keeper.

5.0 out of 5 stars Essential reading., October 10, 2004
This review is from: Guide to State Legislative Lobbying, Revised Edition (Paperback)
I am more than a little surprised by the previous review and feel compelled to add my 2 cents. I have found Robert Guyer's book essential to my own lobbying efforts. Certain aspects of the lobby game may remain outside one's control (the money tossed around by opponents, the strength of a particular constituency), but this does not negate the importance of Guyer's book -- a richly informative guide that transforms the art of lobbying into more of a science, providing insight into the elements crucial to any successful lobbying venture. After reading it (and taking Guyer's course), I was much clearer on what I needed to do to hit a home run.

5.0 out of 5 stars Bob Guyer-Guide to State Legislative Lobbying & Seminar, January 18, 2010
I highly reccomend Bob Guyer's Guide to State Legislative Lobbying as well as his seminar. The information provided in Bob's book is highly informative and clearly presented. Bob discussion on the theory of lobbying and its importance to all organizations should be require reading for senior management and decision makers. The wealth of experience and the passion Bob displays in his seminars will leave a lasting positive impression. As a lobbyist for both Wyeth Pharmaceuticals and AstraZeneca Pharmaceuticals, the principles I learned from Bob were used in my day to day interaction with legislators, regulators, and executive branch officials.
