4.0 out of 5 stars Being in a state of constrant stress is not healthy and can be managed or eliminated, September 20, 2007
This review is from: Guide to Stress Reduction, 2nd Ed. (Paperback)
This book has remained in print for 25 years so it definitely has an audience. The author makes his living helping people learn techniques to eliminate the stress response from their lives by learning to trigger the relaxation response. This book teaches you a variety of techniques from deep breathing exercises to visualization, mediation, and gentle exercise.

While he provides the text for talking you through these exercises in the book, he also sells tapes on his website. The idea would be that you would listen to him talk you through them rather than trying to remember the words in the book or read them while you are trying to focus your attention elsewhere.

I think what he says is generally good advice even if he gets a bit new agey for my tastes.

4.0 out of 5 stars A guide to fighting stress at work and home, December 20, 2007
This review is from: Guide to Stress Reduction, 2nd Ed. (Paperback)
This is the latest version of a bestseller that has been in print for more than 25 years. John Mason is clear and persuasive about why constant stress is an inappropriate (if natural) part of modern life. The techniques for learning to relax and letting go of stress make a lot of sense, and tapes of the various methods are available to buy from the author's associated Web site. Some of the medically related claims about the benefits of stress reduction are somewhat less convincing, but taken as a practical approach to becoming healthier and happier through relaxation, this book is a proven winner. We recommend it to anyone suffering from undue stress in their working life or at home.
