Poor, uninspiring and a waste of money,
This review is from: The Guy's Guide to Surviving Pregnancy, Childbirth and the First Year of Fatherhood (Paperback)
This book is exactly what the author claims it to be: the story of a man who never wanted to be a father and to whom this seems to have happened accidentally. Until then, we're ok. Soon we realize that the author has no or very little education on pregnancy, child education or any sort of academic background granting him the right to claim providing fathers-to-be with a "surviving guide".
In reality, the macho and insensitive approach to the book makes one feel that pregnancy is a burden and that, whatever you do as a father-to-be, just do the bare minimum to survive and hope for the best. I guess in this day and age, everyone believes they have a right to express themselves and publish a book. In our capitalist mind, it's OK, but all this book is doing is taking space on a shelf in some bookstore. I strongly disadvise reading this if you want to learn anything about how to help your partner, wife or girlfriend to get through pregnancy. And mostly, I strongly disadvise reading this book if you want tips on how to deal with your new role and responsibilities as a father.

As the title says, he is merely trying to survive,
This review is from: The Guy's Guide to Surviving Pregnancy, Childbirth and the First Year of Fatherhood (Paperback)
While I understand that this book will appeal to some types, please read this title carefully. The author is merely trying to survive pregnancy.
I bought this book for my husband as a father's day gift as a new dad to be. He was disgusted with the tone of the author immediately and the "humor" throughout the book. It was clear that the author came from a very different lifestyle than ours and I was sorry for not reading the reviews more carefully before my purchase. I understand where the author is coming from. I've known men like him and he's exactly the kind of man that we would never take parenting advice from. In fact the author himself says that the only thing that he has to offer is the advice to take no parenting advice from anyone. I am sorry that I made the purchase and certainly will never recommend this book to anyone else. I will try to find someone to give it to who might enjoy it more, but most likely it will be thrown away.

Great Book, But You Have to Be Smart to Enjoy It!,

This review is from: The Guy's Guide to Surviving Pregnancy, Childbirth, and the First Year of Fatherhood (Kindle Edition)
Before I wrote my own review, I was reading through the other reviews and noticed that they were EXTREMELY polarized. For the most part people either loved it or hated it. I can explain this. This book is very obviously, from the time you pick it up, not intended to be a serious guide on how to deal with pregnancy. If you're looking for a pregnancy text book, this is not for you. If you're looking for a great read with some good sarcastic smart a$$ humor that also has some very real insight into pregnancy from a guy's perspective, then this is a great book. We didn't buy this before our first pregnancy, but we picked it up as we were expecting our second. Having been through it all once before, this book pretty much nails things on the head in a very light hearted and readable manner (which is very important for me, as I have ADD when it comes to reading). If you're an expectant mother you might want to share some information from the text book you're probably reading with your husband too; but, I promise he will get much more that he can relate to and will be much more interested in this book. I highly recommend it, but you have to have a good sense of humor and not be too "anal" to appreciate it.
We actually liked it so much that we bought three additional copies and gave them as gifts to other couples who were expecting.

Skip this,
This review is from: The Guy's Guide to Surviving Pregnancy, Childbirth and the First Year of Fatherhood (Paperback)
My husband was given this book as a gift when I first got pregnant. Don't be deceived by the title: this book is not informative at all. It is merely a collection of stories about how the author reacted to his wifes pregnancy. It is self-indulgent crap. Crider's writing style tries to be cheeky but just comes off obnoxious. He probably hangs out with a lot of people that say "git 'er done". If that's sounds like you, by all means go for it.
I think the title is very misleading. For those looking for a humorous and informative book to help a nervous new or future dad they know, check out the book "Be Prepared: A Practical Handbook for Dads." It's practical, very informative, and pretty funny. My husband and I both liked that one and thought this "crider guide" thing was worthless trash.

You have to laugh at yourself sometimes.....,
By Al Whittington (Chesapeake, Va USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: The Guy's Guide to Surviving Pregnancy, Childbirth and the First Year of Fatherhood (Paperback)
First...this book is for the guys...not the wives...sorry, but its true...the author wrote a book for guys who just found out they are going to be fathers that haven't picked up a book in years and just want a glimpse of what is coming..for me, it was a gateway drug to read on and get more informed. It was fun to read a couple quotes to my wife, but its a guys book and and just like the locker room and Vegas, you keep it to yourself unless it is pertinent to the situation.
Second....for all the wives, you have to understand, as a soon to be dad, we are just as scared as you sometimes, and REFUSE to let anyone know it. so let your man read the book, have his laughs and learn a little. Then go buy him a copy ofWhat to Expect When You're Expecting (Revised Edition) he'll laugh some more, learn a little more and he'll probably start to ask questions, which is going to help both of you through the pregnancy. Finally...for all the haters of this book, sorry you don't get the joke, and I'm sorry you can't laugh at the little things in life sometimes, you must be sad a lot. Enjoy the read guys, it goes quick.

Even mommy thought the book was funny,
This review is from: The Guy's Guide to Surviving Pregnancy, Childbirth and the First Year of Fatherhood (Paperback)
I picked this book for my husband, while I was going through my pregnancy.
With all the serious things that have to change, once you are expecting, it was nice to have a book that brought humor into the situation. Women have tons of books to read from serious to funny during pregnancy. I am so glad this man wrote a book bringing out the humor from the male perspective. No, it is not educational, but it is funny!

My husband was given this book as a gift. I often heard him laughing when reading it so I decided to pick it up to see what was so funny. I was laughing so hard I was in tears. Being pregnant and knowing our poor husbands and what they go through, humor is important here and there! This book definitely gets you laughing. If you are looking for a book of real information or facts because you are freaked out about pregnancy--then this is not the book for you. However, if you want a good laugh, while learning about how women can be crazy during pregnancy (yes, I admit it) then this is the book for you. Great gift for the layed back guy who appreciates a funny pregnancy book.

My husband picked this book among the many found on Amazon, and for someone who hasn't read a book in years, he was half-way through this book in the first two days. He couldn't put it down and I often found him with tears rolling down his face because he was laughing so hard. He said it's great book, very glad he got it!!!

This book is great! It's a refreshing change from the thousands of other overly serious pregnancy books that have you thinking there's no way you can get that baby out without screwing something up. It is not a serious how-to manual, but rather an honest and entertaining account of what most of us expectant fathers are going through. My apologies to all those sitting next to me on the plane when I read this book, my constant laughter must have been quite disturbing!

It is a very good book. I liked it a lot. After reading the introduction, I couldn't stop, so I read the whole book and than I gave it to my husband. I think that this book can "prepare" men to be father's, to go over their fear of having a baby.
