Book Description

Written by one of the foremost experts on sports nutrition and performance, A Guide to Understanding Dietary Supplements takes a critical look at the dietary supplement industry. With an estimated 60 percent of adult Americans using dietary supplements every day, the need for a thorough examination of the hundreds of products on the market is long overdue. This comprehensive guide (Selected as an Outstanding Academic Title by Choice Magazine) presents straightforward analysis from a consumer's perspective, giving you the facts on more than 140 supplements and information on which supplements work (and which don't!) for a wide range of health conditions—from preventing cancer and heart disease to fighting diabetes and depression.

United States Department of Agriculture surveys show that more than 70 percent of Americans fail to achieve daily recommended levels for many vitamins and minerals. With today's emphasis on fitness, millions are investing their money and health in quick-fix solutions-supplements promoted as cure-alls to right nutritional wrongs, lower the likelihood of disease, and work dietary miracles. A Guide to Understanding Dietary Supplements presents a more realistic view of supplements as neither miracle cure nor nutritional sham, but as consumer products to be accepted or rejected based on scientific fact, not fitness fantasy.

A Guide to Understanding Dietary Supplements looks at the pros and cons of dietary supplements in the areas of:
  • weight loss
  • bones and joints
  • energy, brain, and mood
  • heart, eye, and gastrointestinal health
  • male and female health
  • cancer, diabetes, and the immune system
  • sports and ergogenic aids
In addition, the book presents an overview of the dietary supplement industry and the regulations that govern it and looks at the process for developing new products. Designed to cut through the confusion surrounding dietary supplements, A Guide to Understanding Dietary Supplemens is an invaluable resource for students, educators and professionals who deal with nutrition, exercise, physical education, nursing, and anyone else interested in health and fitness.

More About the Author

Thanks for visiting my Amazon.com "Author Central" page.

I am an exercise physiologist, nutritional biochemist, and entrepreneur who helps people to Look, Feel, and Perform at their peak potential. My MS is in Exercise Science from UMass-Amherst, my PhD is in Nutritional Biochemistry from Rutgers, and I've studied entrepreneurship (EMP) at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT).

I taught Nutrition and ran the Nutrition Clinic at the Univ of Utah for about 5 years - where I developed a full-semester course on dietary supplements and natural products (because Utah is sort of the "silicon valley" of nutrition products).

I am also the Executive Producer of the documentary film about America's obesity epidemic, Killer At Large, which has won a number of "best documentary" awards on the film festival circuit and has been featured within Michelle Obama's "Let's Move" initiative to fight childhood obesity (as part of the "Chef's Move to School's" outreach program)

I've written 7 books so far:
-2 textbooks on dietary supplements (carried in most libraries)
-3 books about stress/health (the "Cortisol Connection" series)
-1 book about reducing pain/stiffness naturally with supplements, diet, exercise, stretching, etc (Natural Solutions for Pain Free Living)
- 1 children's book called Springtime Robins
-The NEW book, The Secret of Vigor, is my best one yet...

In addition to my writing projects, my "day job" is running a research and development company (GLH Nutrition) that educates consumers about dietary supplements (via the SupplementWatch website at www.supplementwatch.com) and improve endurance performance (via Wicked Fast Sports Nutrition at www.WickedFastSportsNutrition.com).

I also train for Ultramarathons and Ironman triathlons. I'm an avid reader (go figure) and love my Kindle.

5.0 out of 5 stars Critically evaluating which ones work and which ones don't, November 15, 2003
Knowledgeably written by an sports nutrition and performance expert Shawn M. Talbott, A Guide To Understanding Dietary Supplements is an efficiently organized, clearly written, 713-page survey of more than 140 dietary supplements, critically evaluating which ones work and which ones don't. Summarizing the claims, theory, scientific report, safety, value, and dosage of each common supplement, A Guide To Understanding Dietary Supplements is an excellent consulting resource for physicians, pharmacists, and for interested non-specialist general readers with an interest in dietary supplements for health and fitness.

4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent, objective, scientific overview of most supplements, December 10, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
Dr. Talbott's book strikes this reader as the best available in the area of nutritional supplements. It differs from the mass of literature on this subject by being very objective and scientific. The author forms his opinion on the value of each supplement on the basis of the medical literature. Using such a perspective enables one to cut through the hype, commercial biases, and personal opinions that are the major impetus for most of the other books in this area.

Dr. Talbott has a unique gift which is the ability to write about scientific explanations for the mechanism of supplements and yet make his writing understandable to a lay audience. I have rarely before read a science book that was such a pleasure to read.

While Dr Talbott's major emphasis is on the value (or lack thereof) of each supplement he also includes much additional material that is well worth reading. Foremost among this information are other methods (not involving supplements), such as dietary manipulation, to treat obesity, joint illness, and so on. He also has 50-60 pages of introductory information that cover the general area of supplements and allow the reader an excellent overview of the topic.

There is only one criticism that I make and it leads me to give the book 4 stars rather than 5. That is the fact that the book is now 8 years old. This would be a minor concern in some areas but we are dealing here with a rapidly expanding field. The book is in need of re-editing and I sincerely hope that Dr Talbott is able to write a new edition.

If you only read one book in this topical area, make it this one.
