A guide for teaching about the book " The Cricket in Times Square "in the classroon, November 11, 2010
This review is from: A Guide for Using The Cricket in Times Square in the Classroom (Paperback)
My mom asked me to order this book as a supplement for teaching about the book "Cricket in Times Square" Very in depth she said but not always easy to put in terms children could understand.

I home-school my daughter and when I saw this I thought it looked interesting. I'm really glad I got it.
This book breaks down the classic story, The Cricket In Time Square, by every 3-4 chapters to make sections. Each section has a quiz and other academics, and some fun ideas to go along with the story. There is also a list of vocabulary words for each section.
I got two copies of the actual book The Cricket In Time Square at the library. They even have a cartoon movie I will check out for us to watch after we finish reading it. We are about half way through the book right now and it's been enjoyable (and this is from a child who does not like reading).
This study guide has different things in it such as learning what's in a newspaper, a coin/money page, questions on who does chores in your home and is it helpful to share the chores, info on making a brochure for your town, some Chinese recipes (including an easy fortune cookie), book report ideas, drawing a cricket cage, and more.
I think this book could be used for a variety of ages, probably best for grades 3-6, depending on your child's level. You could easily adapt things to make them easier or more difficult. There is even a page in this book about making a news stand out of a big box, which obviously would be for younger students. Yet there is the project of making a brochure for your town which could be quick and easy for a young child, but could get more involved and challenging for older kids. The quizzes could be turned into discussions instead if prefer that.
This study guide has helped make the story come alive and be much more memorable. Inside the cover it lists dozens more classic books that have study guides and I am definitely going to look into getting a few more. I highly recommend it.
If you search online for "Cricket In Time Square study guide or lesson plans" you will also find some ideas from teachers that you can add along with this. But I am glad I got this book because it's been a great guide and I love the vocab and some of the fun ideas. The quizzes have also helped me to see my daughter is paying attention and comprehending the story. We take turns with me reading and she follows along in the book, or vice versa, or sometimes we say we'll each read up to chapter such-and-such by Friday - it breaks it up a bit.
We are having fun with it.
