Not a complete review, however for those of us who struggle with getting Unix shell scripting off the ground and understanding how to put a script together from scratch - this book is about a close as I have come across to explaining how to do it. I have read books, done tutorials online, went to classes and still could not grasp how to write a script from scratch, without ripping someone else's script and modifying it.
The book teaches you the core of the system and that's what makes it worth the price.

This review is from: Guide to UNIX Using Linux (Networking (Course Technology)) (Paperback)
This is a comprehensive book and excellent tool, only problem is pages 13 - 44 are missing, not torn out, just COMPLETELY MISSING. otherwise this is an excellent source of information for beginners and pros with Linux/UNIX.

Great beginner UNIX/Linux book,
By Misty (Glendale, AZ) - See all my reviews

This book takes its reader from the very basic Linux concepts to writing some scripts in Perl, CGI, C & C++. It makes a gradual progression which is great for a thorough understanding of each skill. This was my textbook for a Linux class. Although I don't feel the class was that great, the book is. After all, in most cases, if you are dedicated to the subject and have a decent text, you will learn. I've taken more advanced Linux courses since and keep this book as reference and I'm sure I will continue to throughout my career.

An excellent book for those new to Linux. The book starts with the basics and has numerous hands-on exercises to help understand concepts and commands. The emphasis of the book is on the command line.

I found out on a Tuesday that I would need this book at the beginning of the next week. I went to the bookstore and found out they did not have it. So, as usual I went to Amazon. I found it right away and ordered it on a Tuesday. It arrived at the Post Office on Friday in time for studying for my Monday class. It was great. Some of the kids in the class did not go this route, and they got their books after we took the final. I'm glad Amazon was there and I know about it. PS The book was 1/2 the price it would have been new in the book store, and you could hardly tell it was used. It had a CD in the back, unscratched!
I'll tell you something else about used books. Sometimes they are highlighted or written in. Those are the best, the former student made notes on something important and 9 out of 10 times it is the same thing your Prof. is going to stress!
