5.0 out of 5 stars Beautifully organized and illustrated, June 7, 2002
By A Customer
This book is very intelligently organized. Ms. Levine chose to order the identification keys in a manner that would be most helpful, rather than strictly by botanical taxonomy. This makes sense given that the winter remains of plants do not track their taxonomy. The illustrations are also a joy just to look at.

5.0 out of 5 stars Indespensable Reference, January 18, 2012
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
There is not another guide quite like this one. Most botany guides deal with plants when they are either flowering or are in their green leafy states. This guide though deals entirely with overwintering wildflower structures. I was required to get this book by a professor as a class book while in college. Even today I refer back to it when I see something that I can't quite remember what it was. Many of the plants in this guide are important to wildlife during the winter so it's a perfect companion with "American Wildlife and Plants: A Guide To Wildlife Food Habits". If you have ever wanted to groom your yard to be beneficial to overwintering birds. Or you want to plant natives instead of non-natives/invasive then this can give you an idea of what wildflowers might look interesting during the winter and "American Wildlife and Plants" will give you an idea of how beneficial that plant is to the animals.

If you are a botany nut this is a highly recommended book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great for identifying plants out of season, January 3, 2011

This book has illustrations of plants in their winter states, great if you work in an environmental field. It shows you the plan without the spring/summer flower, as well as provides a written description of each species.
