4.0 out of 5 stars Sound advice with no BS as promised, March 10, 2011

This review is from: The No B.S. Guide To Winning Online No Limit Texas Hold'em (Kindle Edition)
I have read many poker strategy books with varying success rates. The problem with most poker strategy books is that they waste so many pages with basic strategy any semi-experienced poker player knows, and they have too many hard-set rules to follow.

This book gives very sound poker strategy advice, and it's not all number theory and pot odds. The most important information I gleaned from this book are key psychological phrases that the author repeats throughout the book that keep you out of trouble in certain situations. The goal of the author is to give you a clear head in a game that can otherwise cause you to think irrationally.

What tournaments are actually profitable, and which ones are just a glorified lottery ticket (one of my favorite revelations)? Why do the idiots sometime win and what should you do when they beat you (besides swear at the screen)? You've just double up three times in a row, what the heck do you do with all these chips?

He also goes into theory that you would expect: How do you play A-K? Are pocket rockets invincible? What do you do when you miss the flop? What does everyone else have in their hand? How can you tell when an Internet player is bluffing (hint: look at their betting).

After reading half the book, I got to the final table of a large sit-n-go for the first time in my poker career (and on the first try)!

I first balked at the price, but I quickly made it up after getting in the money so many times in tournaments.

There are so many real-life examples and snippets of advice that are worth reading over and over. When I bust out of a tournament, teetering on tilt, I lay down and read a chapter or two of this book to clear my mind and start thinking like a smart poker player again (or, as he suggests, just go to bed.)

This is a book for a hobby Poker player who wants to make money from time to time instead of losing it. He makes no promises of making millions.

This is the best poker book I have read by far. The only reason I give it four stars is that the Kindle edition does not have a Table of Contents, nor any form of indexing to skip between sections, so be prepared to set your own bookmarks. It also isn't great for a reference, so I suggest keeping paper handy and writing down notes that you can reference when you are in the action.

This is an excellent book for INTERNET poker. It should not be your first book, as if you don't already know the game, it may go over your head. There are alot of good books out there about Texas Hold'em, but what makes this book unique is that it's targeted for online poker, which has different considerations. It is easy to read, direct to the point, and has improved my game immensely. You will win back the cost of this book, repeatedly, so it's worth the investment. Enjoy and good luck at your game.
