My daughter bought this toy chest to have at my house last year. It is top quality construction, thick wood that is strong and firm, with beautiful detailing. The animals are not just painted on, but hand carved. The top stays up and doesn't slam down or pinch little fingers. We love it and it will be in our family for decades. Also, I know she paid much more for it, so current sales price is a real deal for what you get. We are getting the coordinating book rack and step stool for this Christmas.

I bought this for my grandson when he was born. I was extremely pleased with the quality and beauty of this item. I think it will be around for a long time. It is absolutely beautiful, spacious and functional.

This is my first review-writing experience and felt that this product deserved the time for a review. I cannot say enough about how nice this toy chest is and how perfect it is for my 2 year old. It's large enough to store numerous books, 2 bags of large blocks, puppets, etc., and has the 'slow-close' so we feel safe that it will not slam shut on our son and is also very sturdy. Additionally, it is beautiful! The animals have a 'carved' appearance and the colors are quite vibrant. I love this toy chest! We hope to keep it in the family for many, many years to come.

Safari Toy Chest We received this item damaged. The bottom of the toy chest was broken in two places. The box did not appear to be damaged, so I do not believe the damage was due to shipping. We can not assemble the chest until the replacement part is shipped.

I just received and put together this toy chest this weekend (Feb 14th, 2009).
The lid of the toy chest was damaged, and it didn't look like shipping damage, as all of the packaging material seemed in good order. Most likely it happened during the construction of the lid.
The screws that come with this thing are very cheap; in fact I highly recommend spending another $6 and buying similar screws from your local home store and using those to put this together. For some reason, the hinge mechanism tore one of the screws in half, and my screwdriver stripped about 4 of the screws (that is why I recommend getting your own screws).
The paint looked pretty good as well as the woodwork, although the Zebra had a red splotch of paint on it's face...is that on purpose?

this really is a beautiful piece of furniture, it is hard to believe that so much attention to detail and quality has gone into childrens furniture. the hinges are the type that won't close and trap unsuspecting little fingers, the carvings and the colurs are really vibrant without being garish like some other play room furniture, it really completes a childs room to have a toy box and for me this is a real winner

This toy chest is absolutly wonderful. We received it as a baby shower gift to match the Safari theme of his room. It is a super cute piece and is a good size. We recently had an issue with some older children (4 & 5) that damaged the lid and Guidecraft customer service sent us a new toychest. The lid is a different design and the improvement looks much sturdier. We have it full of toys and it seems like it is going to work well for us. I did also purchase the matching book stand and didn't grasp the size before ordering, it is a little small compared to the toy chest but is still really cute and perfect size for an 18 month old. Guidecraft has great customer service and adorable products.

This is a beautiful toy chest. We received it as a present for our 2-year old to match the safari table we have. We love the table, we have used it everyday for over a year and it is still in great shape. So we were excited for the toy chest. However, the front piece did not fit when we tried to put it together the first time. Customer service was wonderful and sent out a new one no problem. Putting it together again we still had problems and while we are not handymen, we have put many items like this together since becoming parents. But in the end it looks wonderful and works very well. Our son has no problems opening it, digging around in it and closing it. I'm sure it will hold up well like the table has. I definitely recommend it, just be aware that it may take a little extra work to get it together right.

The toy chest came in damaged in number of places, particularly chipped at the bottom partition and a piece broken off at the cover. There were some scratches in various other locations. I was not happy with the quality of construction due to pressed wood that does not lend itself to being very durable. However the customer service refunded the money, since we did not want a new one. The carvings are pretty and walls look solid, bottom partition looks week.
