Lorie and Thomas Dilley, experienced geologists and long-time Alaska residents, have put together a "Guidebook to Geology of Anchorage, Alaska." In a compact 200 pages packed with photographs, schematics, and diagrams, the Dilleys explain the surprising complex and dynamic geology of Anchorage, Alaska's largest city and the destination of thousands of tourists each year.

The Anchorage Bowl and the adjacent Chugach Mountains are a superb outdoor geology classroom. As the Dilleys document, virtually every type of geologic process, including the effects of wind, water, weathering, glaciation, and man can be seen in or near the city. Many are readily accessible to casual visitors once they know where and what to look for. This type of knowledge can only enhance the experience of the visitor and the resident in exploring both the urban and exurban wilds of Anchorage.

The guidebook presupposes at least some familiarity with basic science; those without at least a smattering of geology may find this guidebook hard to follow. The guide contains numerous excellent photographs taken in Anchorage, the Chugach, and along the Knik River; unfortunately, a few are used to illustrate a teaching point without being labeled as to their location.

This guidebook is highly recommended to the visitor with some geology background who wishes to understand the dynamic landscape in the Anchorage area. This guidebook is also recommended to the Anchorage resident who wishes to enhance his appreciation of the spectacular scenary in the Anchorage Bowl.

This book provided me with outstanding photographs of Anchorage and the surrounding area. It was great for our trip to Alaska to have a handy reference that also taught me something about the geology of the place. Highly recommend it.

This book is a fantastic find! Either on a trip to visit Anchorage or if you live here you need to have a copy with you always.
