Book Description

April 1, 2003
Written in response to recent developments in reading research and a demand by primary-grade teachers for a comprehension-based instructional framework, author Maureen McLaughlin presents Guided Comprehension in the Primary Grades. Adapting the Guided Comprehension Model introduced in her best-selling book (with Mary Beth Allen) Guided Comprehension: A Teaching Model for Grades 3-8, McLaughlin presents a teaching framework that develops reading comprehension in primary-grade students through direct and guided strategy instruction, numerous opportunities for engagement, and a variety of leveled texts and instructional settings.

Chapters explain the theoretical framework of the Guided Comprehension Model for the Primary Grades, present theme-based lessons for implementing the Model, and offer practical ideas for classroom organization and management. The appendixes provide additional teaching ideas, a literacy continuum for the primary grades, extensive lists of resources, reproducible forms, and home-school connections. The book will help you implement the Model in your classroom and teach comprehension strategies to your youngest learners.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great ideas, tough for non-readers, March 28, 2004

This review is from: Guided Comprehension in the Primary Grades (Paperback)
I bought three books on this topic, and this one is the best. It has a great mix of pedagogy description and in-depth case studies and lesson plans. The appendices contain over 100 pages of activities and blacklines. There are four theme-based units with lots of details and student work. Mostly, I just think that this book has the most specific, practical information of the ones I have looked at. I plan to use it in a university class I am teaching.

My only concern is that a lot of the activities assume that primary grade students have more reading ability than my students do. These strategies would defintely be great for students with some reading ability, but I'm not sure they will work with kindergarteners. Lots of the masters contain text that my students may not be able to decode.
