4.0 out of 5 stars Great ideas, tough for non-readers, March 28, 2004

This review is from: Guided Comprehension in the Primary Grades (Paperback)
I bought three books on this topic, and this one is the best. It has a great mix of pedagogy description and in-depth case studies and lesson plans. The appendices contain over 100 pages of activities and blacklines. There are four theme-based units with lots of details and student work. Mostly, I just think that this book has the most specific, practical information of the ones I have looked at. I plan to use it in a university class I am teaching.

My only concern is that a lot of the activities assume that primary grade students have more reading ability than my students do. These strategies would defintely be great for students with some reading ability, but I'm not sure they will work with kindergarteners. Lots of the masters contain text that my students may not be able to decode.
