5.0 out of 5 stars This book started me on the road to recovery, November 25, 2000

This review is from: Guided Imagery for Self-Healing (Paperback)
This book is an updated and improved version of Dr. Rossman's "Healing Yourself." When I was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis in 1989, I was depressed, scared, and didn't know where to turn. Doctors had nothing effective, and still don't. Rossman's book, and the tapes that go with it, got me moving again. It helped me get in touch with inner strength, and find out what I needed to do to recover.

I have consulted his book and tapes for nearly ten years, and they have always helped me to reach my maximum state of wellness. I have shared these resources with friends and family, with excellent results in most cases.

Imagery is a way of getting in touch with parts of ourselves that don't talk in words, aspects of ourselves we have ignored, which may be screaming for attention through physical symptoms or painful emotions. Whatever has caused our illness, there are always spiritual and emotional aspects that contribute to our healing or getting worse. Exploring those dimensions of our lives enables us to care for ourselves effectively.

In various imagery exercises, we can "listen to our symptoms," "explore our resistance" (to change) and connect with an "inner advisor," a figure of wisdom and kindness who has been with us since we were born. The exercises are always relaxing, frequently informative, and sometimes transformational. They are easy to use and hold up well to repeated use, unlike some visualization scripts which get boring after a few uses.

Dr. Rossman's explanation of what imagery is and how it works is clearer than anything I can provide here. For anyone facing physical or emotional health problems, "Guided Imagery" is truly a vital resource for self-care and healing.

5.0 out of 5 stars above the rest, January 3, 2002
This review is from: Guided Imagery for Self-Healing (Paperback)
I am a therapist and use guided imagery alot. Rossman's book is invaluable to me as a therapist and my clients as well. It is very clear and can be recommended to my clients who are interested. But the healing power of interactive guided imagery surpasses any quided imagery that we can come up with, another words - it is better to help guide someone to their own healing places, images, and symbols. It never ceases to amaze me the self healing mechanisms that we possess - even the most trumatized. This is a suburb book, above all the rest!

5.0 out of 5 stars For seekers of wellness and practioners alike., August 17, 2001
This review is from: Guided Imagery for Self-Healing (Paperback)
As a graduate of the Academy for Guided Imagery in Mill Valley, California, of which Dr. Rossman is a co-founder and director, it really comes as no surprise to me to find this book is written in a way that demonstrates very clearly the results of Dr. Rossman's many years of experience in the field. It displays the sensitivity with clear insight that are the hallmarks of a competent and compassionate imagery practitioner. For anyone seeking to develop their skills as an imagery guide as well as those who face their own life-challenging events and wish to take some charge of their physical and emotional lives, I can heartily recommend this volume.

5.0 out of 5 stars A great book for therapists, March 9, 2007

Since the early 70's I've looked for inner peace, and personal growth through a variety of relaxation, brain-wave and body work techniques. As a psychotherapist I've been searching for ways to help my clients relax and reach into their deeper selves in order to become healthier, happier people. Towards that end I've been buying a lot of books as well as CD's and Guided Imagery for Self-Healing is the best I've found. Dr. Rossman writes with a down to earth clarity and accessability. His scrips are excellent; they are not too long or overly repetitive, they do not contain negative language or complex directives, and after each guided imagery script, he suggests questions for exploring and evaluating the experience. I appreciate the way he explains the reasons for practicing relaxation and guided imagery; the way he addresses possible stumbeling blocks, and the clear and practical way the book is organized. While written as a self-help book, it easily translates into an interactive endeavor. Therefor I highly recommend this book to therapists who want to integrate relaxation and guided imagery into their clinical practice.

A wonderful book, clear, concise and full of information. An enlightening and practical book for practitioners and patients on the healing power of imagery. Should be on bookshelves everywhere...medical schools, holistic centers, and bedside tables.

This book is written with great wisdom. The discussion of imagery as it relates to our life energy is excellent. I haven't found this connection in other books on imagery. If you're at all interested in the power of imagery, you'll find something of value here.

I'm biased. I took imagery training with Marty Rossman some years ago and found him down to earth, honest and real, as well as one exceptional practitioner of therapeutic imagery. He writes well too. I came in primed to appreciate his work as I had developed my practice from some of the same sources as Rossman and found that he had done an excellent job of integrating a number of useful techniques and placing them in a good technical context.

I have seen clients of mine use the techniques in this book to alter the course of chronic and painful conditions. I have had personal success using these techniques, too. For the years I was teaching Imagery workshops, this was the textbook I used. It generally got excellent feedback from the workshop participants.

4.0 out of 5 stars Thorough and professional explanation about guided imagery!, August 9, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Guided Imagery for Self-Healing (Paperback)
Guided Imagery was presented in a clear and responsible form without the author resorting to preaching any personal religious philosopy. The part about creating your Inner Advisor was okay as long as I thought he was talking about our subconscious. It was a little far out when he talked about trying to have a dialogue with your symptoms (argue with my ulcer? I don't think so.)All the same it gave me some useful ideas for improving my attitude toward my body's healing systems.
