The format of each lesson includes (1) a brief explanation, (2) directions, (3) one related idea to encourage awareness through-out the day. The format is a self-standing spiral with illustrations, so you can both read and carry out the directions at the same time.

Editorial Reviews

From the Author

When I began studying the Alexander Technique, I wanted a way to bring the teacher's helpful words back to me as I tried out the concepts on my own. Nothing was available. This book fills that gap, and provides topics and words to keep students moving forward at their own pace.

From the Inside Flap

Between lessons, many students ask their teachers, "How can I practice?" The purpose of this book is to assist your exploration of the Alexander Technique both with and without a teacher present. It provides simple activities for you to practice pausing, noticing, inhibiting, directing and allowing. On some lessons, you may want to work with your teacher until you understand the words and directions kinesthetically. There is space on each page for you and your teacher to add thoughts and directions specific to you. The guiding words in each lesson will help you avoid falling back into your habitual ways. Think of Guided Lessons as multiple opportunities to explore your self. I envision a "Lesson" taking 5 to 15 minutes or more, depending on your schedule and interest. Each activity is merely a starting point; you can travel in whatever direction you wish. Lessons can be repeated over and over, because they are never exactly the same.

5.0 out of 5 stars Guided Lessons for Students of the Alexander Technique, October 24, 2007
This review is from: Guided Lessons For Students of The Alexander Technique (Spiral-bound)
This book provides simple, clear and easy-to-follow instructions for "exercises" you can do to practice the Alexander Technique.

I am new to the technique and live in an area where it will be impossible to ever take professional lessons from a teacher. A physical therapist mentioned that the technique and art of relaxing muscles, the spine, and learning new habits would be beneficial for my neck and back pain. I first read the book "How you Stand, How You Move, and How You Live". That book, combined with the "Guided Lessons" have made it easy to teach myself as much as possible. It has been very beneficial in relieving my pain and changing my posture.
