This is the second cd set by John Kabat-Zinn purchased as a gift for my mother-in-law. She loved it! Said the guided meditation is done well and is easy to follow. She is making meditation a regular part of her life because of these cds. She feels relaxed and destressed after doing these meditations. Worth every penny!

Jon Kabat-Zinn, once a Zen practitioner, was able to adapt typical Zen practices such as kinhin (walking meditation) and zazen (sitting meditation), combine them with basic yoga and other practices, and develop Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) in concert with the University of Massachusetts.

MBSR is taught to medical patients and to people in high-stress situations (such as prison convicts). Although "Eastern" meditative practices are often derided by Western traditionalists, MBSR, shorn of its incense and gongs, has been conclusively proven to reduce stress, lower blood pressure, boost the immune system, and bolster an individual's adaptive coping mechanisms.

This four CD set containing the various exercises used by MBSR is part and parcel of the full MBSR course, but can be bought separately. I suggest taking the course, as the individual attention garnered in a group setting adds a whole other dimension to the experience.

I found it good for relaxation (body scan works great for insomniacs like myself) but not so much for actual meditation practice.
