2.0 out of 5 stars Brendan Kelly...again
Lawrence Arms is like the Broadways part II as a trio that seems to pick up where the Broadways left off. One thing I enjoy is that this is album is not as "political" as the Broadways and seems to talk more about life's problems. The guitar part is overpowered by Brendan's high annoying screams, and it gets old really fast. To be honest, it sounds like a...

5.0 out of 5 stars A Guided Tour of Chicago, June 13, 2006

When I bought this cd, I'd never head of Slapstick or Broadways. I was at the record store and, unknowingly picked this cd, other than some of their better reviewed cd's. I didn't know what to expect, but I couldn't have been more impressed.
The lyrics, mostly about their life in Chicago, frustrated with life, pissed at the cold weather, drinking, even how modernized the world's becoming. The Lawrence Arms wrote great lyrics dealing with every type of life experience, they left none of their feelings out of this album.
Brendan's singing sounds great on the album. Not great as in he sings good, or the recordings are special, but his raspy voice kind of molds around the music, and his unique voice becomes a character itself, adds substance to his words.
After buying the other Lawrence Arms albums, A Guided Tour of Chicago is the one I keep coming back to. What hit home for me was the lyrics add such a human aspect to a punk cd that you believe every word Brendan (and Chris on one track) sings, not like other plastic punk bands of today.
The Lawrence Arms did a great job on this album, and I reccomend this to everyone.

5.0 out of 5 stars An incredible display of the Lawrence Arms abilities, March 10, 2003
This review is from: A Guided Tour of Chicago (Audio CD)
This is still my favorite album by them and in my opinion one of the best albums I own. This band's live shows, and energy are spactacular. Just mix A whole lot of beer, some politics, laziness, technology, arguments, and cold weather and you get this album. Its just f-cking incredible. Buy it.

5.0 out of 5 stars More Broadways-esque, But That's Not A Bad Thing At All., March 6, 2002
By A Customer
This review is from: A Guided Tour of Chicago (Audio CD)
This is an excellent album, although a little different than the later LA albums. This CD came out a less than a year after the Broadways broke up, and it the songwriting seems as if Brendan had written them around the Broadways era. The lyrics are more political, which is not a trademark of their later CDs (though not as political as the Broadways were). This is evidenced in such songs as Kevin Costner's Casino and A Guided Tour Of Chicago. Also, the music is quite a bit faster overall, with only a few songs that have a slower drum beat. Chris barely sings on this CD, with his vocals highlighting only about 3/4 of one song on the entire CD, but Brendan's voice makes up for it. Overall though, this is an excellent release and worthy of anyone's CD collection...

5.0 out of 5 stars A really Great CD, August 23, 2001

After hearing both Slapstick and the Broadways I had to have this CD. I have had it for a while know and I just can't get enough of it. The lyrics may not be as poltical as the broadways but they are still kickin with songs like Kevin Costner's Cassino and A guided Tour of Chicago. This is really a great CD and a must have for Broadways Fans. Peace and unity~ashley

5.0 out of 5 stars Not a Generic Brendan Kelley Band, April 6, 2001
By

Some cynics would say, "No big deal it's just Brendan Kelley's sctrachy voice again with the same sounding punk in the band," but that is very far from the truth. This is Brendan's best band since the Slapstick days. The Lawrence Arms(named after an apartment complex in Chicago) have shown that they can play solid punk rock with their own twist. I'm not real sure how they pull it off but they somehow combine a heavy guitar with a rythm bass and fast drums while brendan is singing with a fast, melodic voice. They have made that original sound their own. With them being a local band, I am lucky to have the privelage of seeing them put on a good show frequently...they are definately a band to go check out live. An Evening of Extraordinary Circumstances is an amazing song and probably the best on the CD, but Kevin Costner's Casino takes a close second. Check it out for yourself and give it a try.

I think this record is the best! I like it better than the broadways because i can relate it more to my life. I think the recording is good. I love the guitars and I love the song that chris sings on. I would recommend this record to anyone who likes punk rock.

5.0 out of 5 stars Hands down, the best punk band out there, January 9, 2006
A Kid's Review
This review is from: A Guided Tour of Chicago (Audio CD)
Are you sick of "punk music" these days?
Are you old enough (or mature enough) to realize that bands like Leftover Crack have nothing important to say? (Sorry, punks, I know it's really trendy to talk about killing cops mindlessly).
But, do you still find yourself enjoying straightforward, honest music?
Then you probably are reading into the right band. The Lawrence Arms are a VERY lyrically mature and talented group. Every song is an emotional and/or socio-political standout. The production is lo-fi and more punk than any ridiculous psuedo-anarchist band out there today.
With two singers, Brendan and Chris, it is nearly impossible to become bored with this album.

One thing I enjoy is that this is album is not as "political" as the Broadways and seems to talk more about life's problems. The guitar part is overpowered by Brendan's high annoying screams, and it gets old really fast. To be honest, it sounds like a half-assed recording. You would be better off seeing them live for that's when they sound their best and it would be cheaper.
