This review is from: Guidelines (Vietnam Ground Zero) (Paperback)
This is number 8 in the VIETNAM: GROUND ZERO series of books by GOLD EAGLE books from October, 1987. The VIETNAM: GROUND ZERO series of books running from 1986 thru the mid 1990's totaled 35 books or so. Written in a series, each can be read independently of the others, but read together they form a mosiac of the entire conflict. This particular book focuses on U.S. Air Force planes being shot down over North Vietnam by S2 surface to air missiles fired from a fixed site. But the planes are being hit due to the S2 not showing up on the radar screen. MACV-Saigon feels the Russians are giving the North Vietnamese S2 missles now employing a new technology, the only way to investigate is to insert a small recon force by HALO (high altitude, low opening)to get information about the new S2s. Mack Gerber and a small recon group are chosen to do this sneek and peek operation. What they find is in fact upsetting from a couple of angles, and the surprise reaches all the way back to the highest levels of MACV-Saigon. This is a FUBAR operation from start to finish. These VIETNAM: GROUND ZERO books have interesting characters, well defined situations, and are written with a well chosen, flowing style that keep the pages turning. If you have any interest in military things in general or Vietnam in specific, then reading a few of these may just what's ordered. Good from start to finish. As James A Cox of The Midwest Review stated by in '87, "Extra special...an unexpected find.". Semper Fi. (Happy 10th anniversary, Kay!) |
