Book Description

December 1994
All the requirements for the Irreducible Minimum Musicianship Tests and Musicianship Phases of the National Guild of Piano Teachers Auditions, from elementary through preparatory (advanced) levels, are presented here. But this book isn't just to prepare students for National Guild auditions. It offers a solid regimen of theory and technical practice for the benefit of any student. The first part of the book contains sections on scales, chords and cadences, and arpeggios from elementary through intermediate levels. The second part expands these subjects through advanced levels to include diminished and augmented chords and seventh-chord arpeggios. The book ends with examples suggesting how to practice transposition, sight-reading, and ear training.

3.0 out of 5 stars essentials for beginner, December 29, 2007
This review is from: Guild Musicianship Book - Scales, Chords and Cadences (Sheet music)
Great reference for a beginner. I have been playing for years and I occasionally use mine (1975 version) as a reference. It covers basic scales, chords/inversions, cadences (and, most importantly, sets out the correct fingering for each). The sections on sight reading and ear training are terse, but covered. For ear training you would need to work with someone to create the drills. This book was actually meant to be used in tandem with some formal instruction and was used to prepare students for advancement in a program (the piano guild auditions) - but still a good reference for the price and will not overwhelm a beginner as the book is organized by levels. Does not cover jazz voicings.

2.0 out of 5 stars Not worth the money, December 17, 2006
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Guild Musicianship Book - Scales, Chords and Cadences (Sheet music)
Basic scales and arpeggios.

Chord progression in various keys may be helpful to non-pianists like me but could be found anywhere (probably for free on the web).

No exercises on transposition, sight-reading or ear-training despite their mention on the cover and table of contents
