essentials for beginner,
By Daisy Miller (Boston MA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Guild Musicianship Book - Scales, Chords and Cadences (Sheet music)
Great reference for a beginner. I have been playing for years and I occasionally use mine (1975 version) as a reference. It covers basic scales, chords/inversions, cadences (and, most importantly, sets out the correct fingering for each). The sections on sight reading and ear training are terse, but covered. For ear training you would need to work with someone to create the drills. This book was actually meant to be used in tandem with some formal instruction and was used to prepare students for advancement in a program (the piano guild auditions) - but still a good reference for the price and will not overwhelm a beginner as the book is organized by levels. Does not cover jazz voicings.

Basic scales and arpeggios.Chord progression in various keys may be helpful to non-pianists like me but could be found anywhere (probably for free on the web). No exercises on transposition, sight-reading or ear-training despite their mention on the cover and table of contents |
