5.0 out of 5 stars A note about purchasing USED copies of GW, February 9, 2010
= Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: Guild Wars (Game of the Year Edition) (PC Games) (CD-ROM)
People considering buying USED copies of any Guild Wars game should be aware that if the game access code has been opened or scratched off and used, you will not be able to play the game unless you have the original owner's username and password. This kind of transfer is against the game developer's Terms of Use, so although it might be a workaround, it is still not strictly legal to purchase a used copy of this game unless you are buying it to replace lost or damaged software for your own existing account.

Having said that, I LOVE this game and have spent MANY hours playing it in the 4+ years I have owned it. For me, it never grows tiresome because there are nearly endless possibilities with what you can accomplish. You can play PvP, player vs. player in arena battles where you test your mettle against others of your level, or you can play PvE - player vs. environment where you follow a somewhat loose line of quests and missions designed to allow you to explore the gorgeous and wonderfully detailed landscape and discover new friends (and enemies!) as you play.

You start with four empty character slots, and can customize the way your players look from a varied menu from hairstyle to hair color to faces to skin tone to armor and color of armor, and how tall you want them to be. There are many different professions - Mesmer, Monk, Ranger, Necromancer, Warrior, Elementalist - and many different ways to outfit yourself inside your profession. You might become an axe warrior, or a trapping ranger, or a healing monk... The list goes on with lots of options, which is one of the great things about this game - the variety - and how you develop your characters will determine how you can be a valuable party member or even a leader! (there are no wrong choices or paths)

A quest might be something simple like delivering a message to someone or helping recover a lost basket of (evil spider-surrounded) apples, or it could become an ongoing search for items similar to a scavenger hunt across all three campaigns and the expansion. Missions include tasks such as defending the northern border of your country from an invading military force bent upon destroying everything in its path, or protecting the Prince as he and you fight your way to the King in his stronghold.

Aside from following the missions and quests or arena battles, there are fun "holiday" festivals throughout the year that provide added enjoyment and special items - golden eggs, shamrocks, birthday cupcakes, rock candy crystals, trick-or-treat bags, & the like that improve ingame stats and performance or are just pure fun like masks, mini-games, contests, and minipet presents each year on the anniversary of the creation of your character.

Parents concerned about whether this game is suitable for your younger children should know that there is a profanity filter for the ingame chat, and while the avatars might be clothed in somewhat risque armors (or underwear, as you can strip yourself down) at times, it's not THAT exposed - 13+ is the rating, and the developers have worked hard to keep it safe and appropriate for all who play.

It's a great role-playing game that has NO subscription fees EVER. Unlike World of Warcraft and others, it costs nothing to play Guild Wars except the purchase price of the game. I consider this a HUGE plus. Just make sure your computer system can handle the graphics (which are pretty darned nice but NOT impossible for a smaller computer) and the only other thing you will need is an internet connection! (dial-up connections may not be optimal but WILL work)

I highly recommend this game as it not only is fun but it could help anyone who plays it to learn the spirit of cooperation while working in a group of other live players. There are "henchmen" or non-player characters you can hire to join your party, but it's always more fun to play with a group of real people... Great game.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best PC game ever played!, October 6, 2011
= Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: Guild Wars (Game of the Year Edition) (PC Games) (CD-ROM)
Purchased this game as a suggestion from a friend of mine. Clearly she knew what she was talking about because I can't stop playing this game! I have been a fan and a player of Guild Wars for four years now, and still going strong. I have played many MMO-RPG games out there and NOTHING has compared to my love and commitment towards this game! Game of the Year Edition is a MUST HAVE because of the bonus weapons that are provided and the Fire Imp you can use while leveling from 1-19! Each new character I create has the Fire Imp as a companion and together booty kicking is that much more fun and glorious! If you love WoW or Asheron's Call, this is for you!

4.0 out of 5 stars Good MMORPG on a Budget, January 4, 2011

Guild wars is a great MMORPG for two groups of people. Those who don't want a monthly fee for their RPG, and PVP junkies. Unfortunately, no monthly fees translates to less ongoing development and a game world that is instanced instead of persistent. Also, today, in 2011 you would be looking at a game that is quite dated. Graphics, play styles, and other factors will simply feel old to most gamers. PVP is well established, but well considered, and generally pretty balanced.

That said, remember that games are not an exception to the old adage, "You get what you pay for." If you're already in a monthly fee rpg, then you're paying more than you would for GW, and your game world has been adjusted accordingly. To someone goofing off with online rpg's where "you only pay if you want these upgrades" I'd probably recommend making the one time payouts to buy GW and its expansion packs. In return you'll get a rather static but well designed world, illustrated with beautiful, though dated graphics, to play a straightforward rpg without too much grind required for normal advancement.

5.0 out of 5 stars Guild Wars (Game of the Year Edition), September 6, 2009
A Kid's Review
= Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: Guild Wars (Game of the Year Edition) (PC Games) (CD-ROM)
This game is so wonderful that I still play it even after an entire year and a half and continue to. The graphics are just amazing and the story line isn't bad at all. I love the different ways I can customize my characters and their skills. The only thing I don't like about it is that the female characters' clothes can be a little revealing; but all video games are like that. (Blast those stereotypes!)

You can make PvE (player vs. environment) characters or PvP (player vs. player) characters. The PvE characters start off at level 1 and you have to work your way up to level 20, the highest. If you want you can also do PvP battles with your PvE character if you want to. The PvP characters start off at level 20 and maximum armor with most of the skills unlocked but you can't play PvE with them.

There are:
Warriors: Pretty much humans who fight with swords, axes, hammers.
Rangers: Humans who work with bows and can tame pets to fight along in battle.
Elementalists: People who can fight with fire, earth, air, and water elements.
Necromancers: "Emo" and dark people who can raise minions from corpses, steal health with Death Magic, and put curses on enemies.
Mesmers: People who can steal lots of energy (used for skills) from foes.
Monks: Obviously the characters who heal.

Hopefully I didn't miss any out.

You can also get henchmen ("henchies" or computer controlled players) who fight with you. Or you can always go on the search list and get live players to join your pary. You can also trade items with other players or sell stuff to them for gold.

Gold is used for buying materials for armor, weapons, and other stuff for your characters.

There's also chat so you can talk with real players as you play and make online friends with them. If you want you can form a guild (hence the name Guild Wars) with a bunch of players, buy a guild hall to hang out in, and fight other guilds. You can make alliances with other guilds too then have alliance battles.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great game, August 4, 2009

This is a really great game. As a dad, I appreciate the strategy and planning required to succeed in the game.
The good guy-bad guy dynamic is clearly delineated.

Also, I was glad that this was not a gory game. There is lots of fighting, but it is all bloodless.
Some of the costuming is inappropriate - and my son, of course, discovered quickly that he could strip down to his "boxers" and break dance in the street. But this was a minor negative.
We turned off the chat and only play with henchmen for filling out missions and that has avoided any unwanted language in the game.
When my character encountered the hunters and drank his first "hunter's ale" the screen blurred and the mouse became difficult to control. I actually considered that a good thing. In Icewind Dale, you could sit in a bar and drink dozens of rounds with no ill effect. This was more realistic - though they could have waited through two or three ales before blurring.

Overall, a very good game.

The game is fantastic, but I must give this product 1 star. In order to play the game, a 25-digit product code/serial number is required. This was not shipped with the packaging, and is not located in any of the files included on the 2 Installation CDs that were enclosed in the packaging. Therefore, I have paid for a product that I cannot use. I am in contact with NYC trying to get either a replacement game or the missing serial number. Wish me luck, please.
