Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

In this three-handkerchief melodrama with two strong heroines and a dearth of heroes, unwed teen Lili Spaulding has given away her baby girl, thinking she'd be adopted by a wealthy couple. Instead, the infant, Corey, grows up scarred in foster homes while Lili becomes a cosmetics mogul's wife. Running her late husband's empire, Lili's still haunted by thoughts of her baby and lavishes affection on her amoral, manipulative stepson, Grant. Corey discovers Lili is her biological mother and plots revenge for her abandonment, taking a job as the businesswoman's spin doctor. At this point, Bretton loses her grip on a good story and cuts too quickly to the climax. Too bad?this could have been a contender.

More About the Author

In the month of February 1982 I wrote and sold my first novel. And no, I wouldn't believe it either if it hadn't happened to me. I sent in my manuscript on Thursday February 21, 1982 and four days later the telephone rang and I heard the amazing words, "We want to buy your book." How I wish you could have seen me. I was standing by the kitchen door of our North Babylon house, the picture of cool sophistication, as I listened to Vivian Stephens explain the terms of the deal to me. You would have thought I'd sold a first book every single day of my life. Yes, I said. Sounds wonderful. Thank you so much for calling. I look forward to our association. That cool sophistication hung on until I hung up the phone, took a deep breath, then promptly threw up on my shoes.

I was thirty-one years old, unagented, unschooled, unfamiliar with anything to do with the business of publishing. To put it mildly, I was in shock. My husband was working in Manhattan at the time (and finishing up his degree at night) so it would be hours until I could break the news to him. This was too exciting to waste on a phone call. I wanted to see his face when I told him that my dream had finally come true -- and came with a $6000 advance!

He pulled into the driveway at midnight. I was waiting in the doorway, holding a bottle of champagne and two glasses. I didn't have to say a word. He knew right away and the look of joy and pride in his eyes warms me now, years later, long after the advance faded into memory.

At first glance, I thought that since 'Guilty Pleasures' focused on the lives of two women, I might not be able to look forward to the strong love stories I've come to depend on Barbara Bretton's books for. Wrong. Corey Prescott and Lili Spaulding are two independant females who are bound together by 30 years of mistakes and regrets. Lilly Ann finds herself pregnant at 17 and is forced to give her baby away. Convinced that the little girl will have a better life than what she could ever provide, she gives up her daughter, knowing she'll regret it for the rest of her life.Corey's life begins troubled. As an infant, the child is scarred in an auto accident and Corey spends the first 6 years of her life shuffled around rough foster homes and rougher foster parents who have no sympathy for the childs disfigured face. Fate brings Corey to a family that long to have a child to love, and it is not until she's a grown woman, that she learns who her birth mother is. Corey vows to find the now famous cosmetics tycoon Lili Spaulding and destroy her, but fate has other plans. Corey finds that she must choose between vengence and the mother she never knew, while Lili must destroy her 'son' to protect her daughter, and learn to accept the love of the man who's held her heart for years. Barbara Bretton is so good at weeving these intricate lives, I sometimes forgot that this book was fiction. She builds her characters so well, that you keep wishing for just a few more chapters so you can keep the story going. The bond between a mother and her child endures for over 30 year in Guilty Pleasures, and it is one of the best 'love' stories, I've read in a while. As with all her books Ms. Bretton keeps me hanging on to each chapter, knowing that the next one will reveal more, dig deeper, and just get better and better than the one before. It's a great book. Don't wait! Click now, and grab this one. You won't be sorry!

2.0 out of 5 stars Welton's Review, December 1, 2004
This review is from: Guilty Pleasures (Paperback)
This book is very long, but it's very interesting.A letter was sent to Lili Spaulding from Mrs. John Bannings. Startled, she looked at more closely. No dault about ot, it was meant for her. Carter secretary must have meantto attach a note asking that he deliver it to her. The bright blue ballpaint ink had smudged over the U in Spaulding, leaving a diagonal smear across the right-hand side. She turned it over an odd feeling of dread tapping between her shoulder blades and doing her rigb cage. The flap had been neatly tucked into the envelope, itself and written on the upper left hand corner was the return address Mrs. John Banning. This book is getting bettet and better. The more I read the more curious I get. I plan to read a lot more. This was the right class for me to take.I'm going to read a lot more now. Not just in class, but on my off time too.Even at or on the road traveling.
