DON JOHNSON DELIVERS,
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Guilty as Sin (DVD)
Don Johnson plays a dangerous sociopath who enjoys planning the execution of the women he uses while they think they are using him. He lures a beautiful well connected attorney into defending him against a murder charge by creating evidence that links her to the crime.
So here's the review: Johnson delivers a stunning portrayal of a man who is barely sane but perfectly effective in his manipulations of people, specifically women. Every scene in which he reveals his character is riveting in its complexity. Without Johnson this is an entertaining movie with a competent cast. But Johnson's perfomance is a master class in acting. If you want to see how it's done, get the DVD.

When I first viewed this movie I was quite frankly surprised, because I thought Don Johnson coudn't be in anything but Miami Vice. Boy was I ever wrong. I mean, maybe this would never be nominated for an Oscar. But as far as the plot is concerned, you think you know what is coming next and you get a big surprise. I liked it so much that I gave it four stars. I just wish Mr. Johnson and Ms. Mornay would do something else, maybe a comedy.

Guilty pleasure,

I really liked this movie in the theater, and yet it's hard to say why because I can't think of too much in particular that really stood out. So for now, I'll recommend (1) Lumet's direction (I'm being a snob--I can't pinpoint why I liked this fact, but his being behind this movie both impressed and surprised me), (2) Johnson's performance, (3) a slam-bang ending that had my friend and me gasping with delight at how far it was willing to go, and (4) one of those moments that can turn an otherwise humdrum movie into a must see -- pay attention to a scene in which Johnson is at a bar and an attractive woman approaches him. What he says in reply to what she says is so good I wish I'd written it.

Life Imitating Art?,

This review is from: Guilty As Sin [VHS] (VHS Tape)
This 1993 movie provides a blueprint for framing an individual by forging DNA evidence. A husband is charged with the murder of his wife, an almost foolproof crime. His defense lawyer learns that in fact he did it! So she manages to get a sample of his blood, then plants it so there is "proof" of his guilt. This lawyer sees to it that justice triumphs, if not the law. Any resemblance to a later real event is not a coincidence, in my opinion.
The drama also comes from the interplay between the characters, and the rest of the story. The 1956 movie "Please Murder Me!" may be a precursor. A woman is accused of murder, her lawyer defends her successfully. Then there is a problem....

This is an "A" list movie with great writing, suspense and casting. I consider this Johnson's best work. He is such a monster, you just hate him in the movie. And he plays his character flawlessly. De Mornay was a perfect pick too. I can't wait for the DVD release!

Rebecca De Mornay-WOW!!!!!!!!!!,
By A Customer
This review is from: Guilty as Sin (DVD)
I think Rebecca De Mornay is a fantastic actress. In this movie she was the best I've ever seen her acting. Her Level of emotion and her talent was so passionate. I just wish she was in parts of this caliber more often.I wonder if Rebecca is'nt being offered the big parts anymore. It is the public's loss and the movie industries loss if thats the case.I haven't seen her in a memorable major role for a long time.I saw her in the film "The Cradle Will Rock" years ago. That was a fabulous performance-but this part in "Guilty As Sin" was better. Her heart of kindness comes through and her fear of being taken advantage of by Don Johnson's character. Her strength in this movie is magnificent-emotionally and physically. Each time I've seen this movie I see it for the first time..because I see new levels of her character that I had'nt noticed before.

Don is perfect!,

The movie is fantastic! Don puts on such a performance that no one could ever say that he isn't a great actor. The script may not be the best but with Don it ranks higher.
I am a major fan of Don Johnson so maybe you think I am biased. Just watch the film and see how great it really is. He deserves an award for this film, or at least more recognition of his acting ability. Pay close attention to the scene at his house where De Mornay and him are talking while Don makes a sandwich. Superb! I would love to see this film re-released as well.
