Comprehensive Guinea Pig Guide,
By Phillip T. Robinson, DVM (JAMUL, CA United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: The Guinea Pig Handbook (Barron's Pet Handbooks) (Paperback)
I found this book to be a comprehensive reference on all of the essential information that anyone would need to successfully keep guinea pigs healthy and happy. In addition to excellent reviews and tips on selection, housing, feeding, safety and breeding, the sections dealing with disease detection and behavioral problems are right on target. I like the use of handy charts and checklists for quick reference. Part of the problem of keeping any unusual pet is understanding the normal behaviors and knowing when something is going wrong that requires veterinary care--the author is a veterinarian and covers this subject in terms that all can understand. This book is generously illustrated with quality photographs and line drawings, tying in nicely with the text to fully explain the authors points. Both veterinarians and average guinea pig owners will find a permanent place on their bookshelves for this handy, clearly written handbook. The photos of the various types of guinea pigs show the interesting variations that these interesting little animals come in.

Excellent and Reliable Source of Information,
By
This review is from: The Guinea Pig Handbook (Barron's Pet Handbooks) (Paperback)
I am very impressed with "The Guinea Pig Handbook". It is actually very well written, and the information is reliable and presented clearly. Unlike a regular text book, or the other manuals that I got from the library, this book gives a historical background on guinea pigs, as well as a reliable source of information for any of the questions or problems I ran into while caring for Bert (my guinea pig). According to my neighbor, who is a veterinarian (and the person that recommended the book to me), there is nothing at all to worry about with reliability of the information in the book. He told me that all of Dr. Vanderlip's books are a great source of information for the beginner and the expert because the information is always clear and reliable.

Best Guinea Pig book available with accurate information!,
By CavyLover (CA, USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: The Guinea Pig Handbook (Barron's Pet Handbooks) (Paperback)
The Guinea Pig Handbook is an excellent resource for everyone who owns a cavy. I have purchased many Guinea Pig books, but this one stands out among all of them and is the one that I constantly refer to. The photographs are beautiful and the information is thorough and detailed. I highly recommend this book to all Guinea Pig owners, whether they have years of experience or they have just purchased their new pet.

Incorrect Information,
By
This review is from: The Guinea Pig Handbook (Barron's Pet Handbooks) (Paperback)
This book provides incorrect information. It's been about three months since I've read it, but one thing I remember is that it says it's okay to use wheels and balls and it IS NOT okay to use wheels and balls with cavies. They cause spinal injuries. Their backs aren't meant to bend that way. I wouldn't take my cavies to any vet that recommends this book unless they point out the parts that are incorrect.

Solid info, great reference,
This review is from: The Guinea Pig Handbook (Barron's Pet Handbooks) (Paperback)
"The Guinea Pig Handbook" is a great book not only to learn about piggies, but can also be used as a reference so it won't collect dust. As another amazon member stated, you should not use balls for guinea pigs because their spines are not that flexible, and a guinea pig should have at least 7.5 square feet in a cage, but besides this, the information is correct and very detailed. Plus, there's quite a few cute pictures of cavies! This is great for an adult.
With this book and access to www.guineapigcages.com, you have all the resources you need to have happy and healthy guinea pigs!

I love this book as it tells so much about guina pigs, very informative, lots of guina pig pictures. I own two guina pigs,Gina and Tina. I will be brushing their fur as I didn't know about this. This book is helping me to understand them better and what their needs are also just enjoying them. I could write so much more about this book, but think I'll stop except to say it was a lot cheaper to buy it from Amazon, ( my favorite place to shop).
