Great First Book on Guinea Pigs,
By A Customer
This review is from: Guinea Pigs: A Complete Pet Owner's Manual (Paperback)
This book is an excellent first book for a new Guinea Pig owner. It is written in very clear English and discusses almost every major topic that would concern a new pet owner. Each chapter is focused and easy to follow. Information is not cluttered with a lot of technical detail. Any child (8+) should be able to read this book with little difficulty. The chapter on Guinea Pig communications is priceless. Many a pet owner has wondered what a certain sound means, now they will have a much better idea of what their pet is trying to communicate. The photos are all of fairly young animals, which are especially cute! The index is wonderfully complete and accurate. In all, a well written and well laid out book for the new Guinea Pig owner

A Special Book To Help Understand Guinea Pigs,

I remember taking in Gweeker, a sweet mixed breed silver and white guinea pig who was being aboused by the other guinea pigs in her pen at the pet store. I suddenly realised I didn't know much how to care for her. One of the first books I bought was this one--and I still thumb through it frequently. That was nearly six years ago. The charts and the lists of good and bad foods for guinea pigs are PRICELESS. Also a bonus are clearly described signs of normal guinea pig behavior and abnormal signs, so you can immediately recognise when to take Piggy to the vet. There are some shortcomings--breeds are not clearly identified in the photos, breeds that are new here in the US are obviously not in there. Also, it is known now that red cedar is BAD bedding for guinea pigs--that fact is not mentioned. This is translated from the German (and is more enjoyable and informative a read than most guinea pig books written by native speakers of English). It does have a European viewpoint of taking care of guinea pigs, so take some advice like picking wild plants for Piggy to eat (too dangerous to do in the US) with a grain of salt. Overall, though, I think Gweeker and the rest of the piggies in my life are glad I bought this book.

A very helpful guide for all owners of guinea pigs. What I like most of this book is the section on the guinea pig's body language. This is something that other guinea pig guide books do not have. Owners will learn from this chapter on how to communicate with their piggies better.I have found that books from the "Barron's Complete Pet Owner's Manuals Series" to be very helpful in terms of care of the pet for any pet owners.

When my first piggie came to live with me I got one book, Peter Gurney's. However soon after I really wanted to learn as much as I could, so I bought many others, this was one. It is ok, it has really good basic information, but it is not complete. You should really look into other books as well, like The Proper Care of Guinea Pigs, by Peter Gurney.Hope that this helps.

Poor Excuse for an Educational Publication,
This review is from: Guinea Pigs: A Complete Pet Owner's Manual (Paperback)
Much of the information in this book in innacurate and misleading. If you are interested in a basic care guide with relevant information, I would suggest The Essential Guinea Pig by Betsy Sikoro Siino.
