5.0 out of 5 stars Fun, colorful, 9-year-old loves it!
When I was growing up most people considered the Guinness Book of World Records as a reference book. If that's what you are looking for, look elsewhere. This book is intended as entertainment. It is colorful, picture-filled and fun to read. My 9-year-old son absolutely loves this series and has collected all the previous editions going back to 2004.

1.0 out of 5 stars Not very well organized
When the GBWR was first published it was designed to help people settle wagers. It was well organized by topic and you could find something quickly. The versions the last couple of years have traded glitziness for utility. They are useless as a reference book. They do not even attempt to cover all the the GWRs. They are barely useful as a table top conversation piece. I...

5.0 out of 5 stars great!, November 10, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Guinness World Records 2012 (Hardcover)
i've been an enthusiast of the guiness book of world records since i was VERY young. i used to spend countless hours perusing the annual records books - memorizing often useless details. it turned out that, over the decades, many of those details have been useful, especially at parties and social gatherings. several times the information has been useful in academic settings. imagine how thrilled i was when my children both expressed an interest in the guiness book of world records. the format changed some years ago - it's much easier to read, page through, perhaps it has a few less records but it has bigger, brighter, and more photogenic images that grab the attention of kids! year after year, it's not significantly different. most of us can go 2-3 years without a new volume. the quality of the information, images, and the books itself is outstanding. this book, this year, is my effort to encourage my son to read a bit more. i give everything a grade, and i believe that this merits a solid "A". i believe that the guiness book of world records is excellent in detail and quality, and ought to be considered essential to public libraries, school libraries, and homes of individuals with an interest in "trivia".

5.0 out of 5 stars Very Informative Book and Great Conversational Piece, November 28, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Guinness World Records 2012 (Hardcover)
Great book, great binding. It's the same thing that you've come to expect from GWB of Records. I usually get a new one every few years. A lot of this info is available on the internet but when I have people over at my house, they almost always pick it up and take a look at it. It really is a great conversational book/coffee table book and you won't be disappointed.

5.0 out of 5 stars As good as always, October 24, 2011
This review is from: Guinness World Records 2012 (Hardcover)
I bought this year's Guinness Book of Records as a gift for my family. There seems to be a lot of new records and there really is something for everyone. The sections are well laid out and the great pictures certainly help to make kids interested. I highly recommend this as a great present for the family. We have also enjoyed "Bop It" and "The Little Book of Indoor Golf Games". All make great stocking stuffers.

5.0 out of 5 stars Dreams and Laughter Are Found in the "Guinness World Records", November 30, 2011
This review is from: Guinness World Records 2012 (Hardcover)
Dreams and laughter are built with the "Guinness World Records." I know. I grew up dreaming to be included, to have accomplished some astonishing stunt or to have achieved an incredible level of physical prowess. And I laughed at the ridiculous obsessions of some of those who made it.

I'm not in it. I tried a few times with some community events in which the most people to do certain things all at once. Inevitably, we would have far too few participants to impress the editors at "Guinness World Records." It was wonderful to try.

Now, the internet satisfies a lot of my curiosities about the bizarre things people do, but the value of this book remains: to serendipitously discover the amazing people in this world. Real people do these things, and are verified by the book's staff.

Every dentist office, auto fix-it shop, and home coffee table needs a copy of this. Readers won't mind waiting quite as much.

Well, here it is. The 2012 version of the Guinness Book of Records. Much of this is silly and baroque. Still, so much fun!

The very first record in this volume? The largest object lifted by helium balloons (in this case, a house). The last? The most layered bed-of nails sandwich (difficult to explain, but a little different!).

In between are myriad records, many of which are of little moment (such as most wins of the mashed potato wrestling championships). Others: Greatest distance pushing a mini scooter; Most times climbing to Mount Everest's summit; First wedding conducted by a robot; Busiest railroad station; Most expensive bridge; Longest running children's magazine; Longest serving TV host; Most wins in a WNBA season.

So, are you interested in world records of a particular sort? Then this book will be enjoyable reading for you.

I bought this for my 8 year old son. He's very fascinated with the information in the book and is often surrounded by his peers when he takes it out.

It was great value for money and arrived quickly.

I bought this for my granddaughter's 12th birthday. She loved it. While the people at her party were still there, she spent most of the time looking at her book.
