4.0 out of 5 stars An ambitious experiment that achieved mixed results
I've owned the LP version of this CD since it was first released, and it brings to mind something that must be kept in mind when reviewing this or any re-release of of 30+ year old material. I've owned the LP version of this CD since it was first released, and it brings to mind something that must be kept in mind when reviewing this or any re-release of of 30+ year old material. When this album was first released, it was NOTICED by jazz guitarists, for no other guitarist at the time had the audacity to mix styles and genres so freely. Here was Burrell, who had released the "Man At Work" LP--a classic straight ahead club recording of his trio--trying something that puzzled some and delighted others. Most, however, respected him as an artist of great versatility and, yes, even courage. To today's ears, Evans' mid-60s charts may at times seem intrusive, one or two numbers may pale when compared to others, but Burrell's great artistry never wavers.

4.0 out of 5 stars and Guitar Soul, November 8, 2000

I like virtuoso guitar play and I heard much prominent guitar players, playing in different styles. But Kenny Burrell not only virtuoso - I think it plays by the soul. The impression from his play much increases due to accompaniment of Gil Evance orchestra. It became for me so strong that I change my bias against the big orchestras on love.

4.0 out of 5 stars Virtuoso Kenny, September 17, 1999
This review is from: Guitar Forms (Audio CD)
For a showcase of technical skills, these is without doubt the most flexible Kenny available.

Gil Evans' arrangements are a happy reminder of his genius for color, mood, and subtle shadings.

I believe that this music has a place in every Jazz library, if only for the fact that, it exhibits the two of them at the top-of-their-game.

5.0 out of 5 stars Reconnect with some beautiful jazz!, November 9, 2006
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Guitar Forms (Audio CD)
Jazz (early combos, big band, bebop, progressive, fusion) and the music of the world's great symphony orchestras defined and shaped my childhood. I LOVED my dad's huge collection of albums (remember those)? I connected at some deep level with the artwork, and the music was just awesome. So I was thrilled to find Kenny Burrell's "Guitar Forms" available on Amazon. I ended up ordering an import CD from Japan because it preserved the original tracks from the original LP. Some of the other offerings added things that, in my humble opinion, ruined the cohesiveness of the whole package.

Burrell's clean, warm guitar is nicely showcased in Gil Evans' arrangements. It's the epitome of 1960s California cool!! The rest of the ensemble perform with flawless artistry. Great for studying by, for entertaining a date over dinner, for doing housework or other chores!! Buy it today!

4.0 out of 5 stars NOT AS GREAT AS LP...BUT, STILL GREAT!!!, January 14, 2005
This review is from: Guitar Forms (Audio CD)
Loved this LP . Got the cd right away, and am somewhat befuddled. If they would have only presented the LP AS IS instead of mindlessly repeating tracks (takes) over & over & over &..well, you get the idea..,it gets repetitious & distracts from the impact of the original. A classic case of where MORE is not BETTER! 5 takes of DOWNSTAIRS, 5 of BREADWINNER, 4 of TERRACE THEME... Is this really neccessary?... TOO MUCH OF A GOOD THING!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Burrell Displays Mastery of Jazz Guitar, September 8, 2009
This review is from: Guitar Forms (Audio CD)
Kenny Burrell `s concept for this album was to demonstrate a variety of jazz guitar styles. And he does so masterfully. The orchestation of Gil Evans and the production of Creed Taylor and the engineering of Rudy Van Gelder combine with Burrell's virtuosity to make is a classic. This is the cornerstone of any jazz library.

5.0 out of 5 stars Moon and Sand, April 12, 2002

This review is from: Guitar Forms (Audio CD)
"Moon and Sand" by Kenny Burrell and the Gil Evans Orchestra is one of the most interesting guitar performances with a Latin combo that I have ever heard. The congas are dramatically panned to the left and the small drum kit at the right, giving the sensation of being stuck into the speakers.

The orchestra is in the back, and Kenny's acoustic guitar (recorded unamplified and without any compression devices) is closer to the listener. Rudy Van Gelder's engineering skills give the listener the sensation of being in a nightclub. Reverberation is one of the "key signatures" of the analog Verve Jazz sound in the sixties, in this recorded by Van Gelder at his personal studio.
