By Gary S
Platform for Display:PlayStation 3|Edition:Game only
Fun: 4.0 out of 5 stars
The Good:
- Legends of Rock has a nice selection of music. There is a good variety from classic rock to 90s alternative to current stuff. The total number of songs is pretty impressive too.

- Single player career mode is fun, and the difficulty was just right on Easy. I tried on Medium though and got whooped. You'll start off as a nobody and slowly work your way up to superstar status. The progression is fun, although not very original.

- Stage designs are fresh and unique, and look pretty damn good on the PS3.

- Fairly good selection of guitars and characters to choose from.

- Good audio quality, which is a must for this genre.

The Bad:
- Online play is spotty at best. I could typically connect to one match, but then I couldn't get connected to a 2nd match. This was a huge disappointment for me because online play was one of the reasons I bought this game.

- Limited customization of the characters. I know World Tour addresses this issue, but the characters only have a couple outfits. It'd be nice if you could custom design your rocker like on Tiger Woods games.

- No idea how to unlock characters. I beat the single player game on Easy mode and didn't unlock a single character. What gives! I assume you need to beat it on Medium or Hard to open them up. Either way, I was disappointed.

- Limited stats. Maybe its me, but they give you all those nice stats at the end of each song and then they're not stored anywhere. There is no way to see your best % of notes hit, longest note streak, etc. Take some notes from Grand Theft Auto, and gimme some stats!!

- Graphics are OK, but could be better.

The Verdict:
A fun game that is great for parties, but don't expect much replay value as a single player, given the spotty online performance.

3.0 out of 5 stars Innovative, But Why So Many Cover Songs October 7, 2008
Platform for Display:PlayStation 3|Edition:Game only
Fun: 4.0 out of 5 stars
Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock is a very innovative game like the other Guitar Hero's, which makes a sedentary hobby of video gaming a little more active and also can inspire an interest in learning to actually play a guitar. I waited awhile and finally gave in and have to say I was impressed.

The guitar is top notch and the interaction with the onscreen action is seamless. There is a significant learning curve that can only be lessened by frequent play. This is not a pick up, play for a few hours, go a week without playing, then come back and expect to be any good type of game. The best advice is to play a little every day/night and get 5 stars on easy on every song before moving to Medium. Each subsequent difficulty level adds speed and more note buttons.

The song list is pretty solid, but in many ways it is disappointing that many are only covers and not originals. In fact, most of the best songs are covers. Sure the cover bands sound like the original artists but I often wondered why no pony up for the original tracks. I hope this is a flaw corrected in the new GH game coming out. I saw "As Made Famous By" way too many times.

Likewise, the song list in the in-game store is basically a bunch of never heard of groups, with the exception of Bret Michaels. Needless to say, I haven't bought much of the in-game store songs. I do understand the PSN store has some good tracks though.

All in all, it is a fun diversion from using a gamepad and brings back old school button mashing speed and coordination. Also, it is fun with groups of people taking turns trying to be a rock god.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great way to kick off Guitar Hero on PS3 January 27, 2010
Platform for Display:PlayStation 3|Edition:Game only
Fun: 5.0 out of 5 stars
Guitar Hero III was the first Guitar Hero game released for the PS3 in 2007. Once again, the game lets the player play through several famous songs from the '60s to 2006. As usual, the player can play with classic characters such as Axel and Johnny Napalm. In addition to these, the game also allows you to play with Slash and Tom Morello. The game also introduced a game mode, which is Battle mode (where you can activate power ups to mess up your opponent). The career set list is also a lot of fun to play through. You'll play everything from classic rock songs, such as Slow Ride, Pride and Joy, Rock You Like a Hurricane, etc, to modern rock, hard rock, and even metal songs such as One by Metallica and The Number of the Beast by Iron Maiden. Other popular music, such as Welcome to the Jungle, Cliffs of Dover, Through the Fire and Flames and Paint it Black, is also featured. So if you have a PS3 and have never played Guitar Hero before or are simply looking for more great Guitar Hero songs, this is a great music game to start with. And if you're still looking for more, head on over to the Playstation Store, where you can find great Downloadable songs from artists such as Boston, Foreigner, Dragonforce, and Metallica. Overall, a really great PS3 game.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good Game But March 2, 2009
Platform for Display:PlayStation 3|Edition:Game only
Fun: 4.0 out of 5 stars
Pretty good game - my introduction to the Guitar Hero franchise. It's got a career mode that's pretty cool and character customizations are pretty neat too. There are a lot of cover songs on this one though which might/might not be to everyone's liking. Overall, it's a pretty fun, interactive game. The only thing I really don't like, which I doubt others will agree with, is the battle-mode option... I don't like it at all, to be honest. But other than that, a good, fun game.
