1.0 out of 5 stars 28 non-transferrable Metallica songs is not worth $60
You only get 28 Metallica songs and then 21 songs from other artists for $60. None of these songs are transferrable to the last Guitar Hero game which came out less than 6 months ago. You cannot play Guitar Hero Metallica with Guitar Hero World Tour. So that means all the DLC you bought every week at $2 a song is not going to be combined with this title. Your dreams of...

If you like Metallica you are going to love this game. You get MOST of Metallica's best songs and can play them on guitar, bass, drums, or sing them on the mic. The career mode is improved over World Tour. You no longer have to play a whole set at one time to unlock the next. You have to get a certain amount of stars to unlock the next, but all the sets are so awesome you are going to want to play them anyway. There are several new features such as Metallifacts which is basically the band playing a song and it giving little VH1 style tidbits about the song while it is playing. The note charts seem to be better than on World Tour as well. There are also little improvement to the interface as well, but let's face it....a guitar hero game is only as good as it's soundtrack. If you don't like metal you probably won't like this game. If you do you are in for a treat with songs such as: Master of Puppets, Enter Sandman, Fade to Black, One, Dyer's Eve, Battery, Hit the Lights, Nothing Else Matters, One, King Nothing, Seek and Destroy, For Whom the Bell Tolls, etc. Not to mention the other bands in the game: Slayer, Alice in Chains, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Machine Head, System of Down and others. It's quite exciting listening to the Ecstacy of Gold as Metallica comes on stage and then rocking out to For Whom the Bell Tolls. So if you are a Metallica fan you have to pick this one up, even if you aren't and you just like a good guitar hero challenge this one should keep you busy for awhile.

5.0 out of 5 stars Possibly the best Guitar Hero out of all of them, April 4, 2009
= Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: Guitar Hero Metallica (Video Game)
Guitar Hero: Metallica was one of my most anticipated video games of 2009 and it didn't disappoint. After this many games, I think I should summarize the series in a paragraph. GHII was an amazing game even if it didn't have the best soundtrack because the game play overshadowed it. This was the last official GH made by Harmonix. GHIII was a great game and was the last GH I was satisfied with. It only had a few minor issues such as easy hammer-ons/pull-offs and over charted songs. GH: Aerosmith was just plain boring and was a simple cash in. GH: World Tour, they started getting better at charting, however, the set list ruined that game. Guitar Hero: Metallica is the first game where Neversoft got everything right. They nailed it.

Let me start off saying that this is, like I said in the title, possibly the best GH out of all of them and I don't know if they'll ever be able to top it. GHM follows GHWT's formula, meaning that bass, drums, and vocals are back. Drums have a new difficulty, Expert+, that uses another bass pedal. I haven't really played any career except guitar, which is ten times more fun than GHWT's guitar career. I do know that the vocals are fixed since they were broken in GHWT. In battle mode, there are a few new additions, "Ride the Lightning", which is designed after "Amp Overload", and "Fade to Black", which blacks out your note chart. There were only a few songs I didn't find fun, while literally half of GHWT wasn't fun. I know that I'm mentioning GHWT a lot in this review, but its because it disappointed me so much and its hard to believe this was made by the same company. GHM has gotten me back into GH after two big disappointments. If you're a fan of Metallica or have been waiting for another good GH, buy this now. This is also a good start if you're new to the series.

5.0 out of 5 stars Remember when Guitar Hero was fun?, April 1, 2009
= Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: Guitar Hero Metallica (Video Game)
Since Rockband has come out the GH series has suffered with mediocre offerings like Guitar Heo: Aerosmith and World Tour. Being a Metallica fan I was doubtful this game would be any good and certainly another flop in the GH track recrod.

Not the case... at all.

It's hard to describe but GH-Metallica FEELS like the GH1-2 on the PS2. Again - hard to describe. The actual GH expierience is fun again.

All of the Metallica tracks are superb. The other bands featured - meh, mostly one time through and you won't replay them. If you know the tunes and are a fan you will get into the playing aspect. My fiance and I were banging our heads through "King Nothing" and really getting into "Nothing Else Matters." The songs are challenging but fun to play on the hard difficulty level. Some songs like "Battery" seem near impossible on expert... as it well should :)

The visuals are great! Metallica is done justic in the GH style. If you've ever seen them live you will notice the mannerisms/gestures of each band member.

Character creation is lack luster and not really worth your time. GH has a ways to go to catch up with Rockband on that one.

If you're fan of the plastic guitar and Metallica - it's worth the $60. Regardless of your views of Metallica they have put the fun factor back into a faltering franchise.

Try before you buy though; the demo is out on Xbox Live featuring "Sad But True."

4.0 out of 5 stars Gimme more of these!!!!, May 3, 2009

It was about we had a game like this, where the set list is made up of great music. RockBand was cool and all, but having to play through songs by Creed, Offspring, and the like, was just way too painful.

GH Metallica Rocks!! Mercyful Fate, Slayer, Suicidal Tendencies, Queen, Machine Head, and of course, a lot of Metallica!!

Playing drums on Expert+ is awesome! We need more of that. Maybe a Guitar Hero "Metal" edition, or something like that, where we'd only get bands such as Nevermore, Black Sabbath, Testament, Megadeth, etc.

Here's the reason why I didn't give this title 5 stars:

* Some songs on the set list could have been replaced. For instance, they could have chosen a heavier song by Alice In Chains (such as Them Bones, Would, etc.). Or even Metallica songs like the ones from Load and Reload could have been dropped in anything else from the first 4 albums.

* The "practice mode" is pretty lame: you play the section once, and then the thing just stops. Why not loop through it like RockBand does?? Am I missing something here?

But again, other than that, this title rocks! I've been playing mostly the drums, but have done quite a bit on vocals, and have just started doing the guitar as well. Can't have enough of it. :)

5.0 out of 5 stars The Best "Guitar Hero" Game So Far, April 1, 2009
= Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: Guitar Hero Metallica (Video Game)
I'm a big fan of the Guitar Hero video games, always have been ever since the first one was released on the PS2 over 3 years ago. All of them have been excellent in my opinion, but last fall saw the release of "Guitar Hero: World Tour" and it was the best one at that point. It had way more songs, the graphics were far superior to previous titles, all the songs were the original versions, there was a create-a-character function, and you could now sing and play drums as well.

Well, imagine all of those awesome features, but with Metallica at the center of it all. Buying this game was a no-brainer for me, because Guitar Hero just happens to be one of my favorite video game series right now and Metallica just happens to be one of my 2 favorite bands of all time. But that doesn't automatically make the game good. I remember I was somewhat disappointed with last year's "Guitar Hero: Aerosmith." I'm an Aerosmith fan, and it was great to have more songs to play, but I found the setlist kinda weak, the game was kinda short, and the graphics now seem subpar compared to "World Tour." But when I first popped in GH Metallica a few days ago, I was instantly blown away. The graphics are stunning, the Metallica avatars are incredibly accurate, and the audience looks awesome! Then, you've got 28 awesome Metallica songs to choose from. That's a winner right there, but they did a very nice job with the song choices. This game still has the same create-a-character option as in "World Tour," and you're still able to sing and play drums in addition to guitar and bass. Some cool new features include the ability to change the difficulty setting in the middle of the song, and you're also now able to get more star power while you're already using it. In addition to the Metallica tunes, you also have 21 songs to choose from by artists who are friends and influences of the band. There are also many more neat little surprises in the game, for example, being able to give your character a variety of different Metallica shirts (many of which I own in real life). You can also unlock James and Kirk's signature guitars and a few bonus characters. If you previously downloaded all the "Death Magnetic" songs, they will unlock on this game after you've finished it. I gotta say, I think this may be the best Guitar Hero game so far...not just because of the music, but the technical features as well. If you have different game systems, I think the X-Box 360 version is the only way to go. The look and feel of the game is obviously far superior to the Wii, and the PS3 is a pretty worthless system. With the incredible success of Metallica's latest album "Death Magnetic," their upcoming induction into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, and the release of this incredibly awesome game, I'd say Metallica is back to being the biggest metal band in the world.

4.0 out of 5 stars All The Songs And More, May 13, 2009
= Fun:4.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: Guitar Hero Metallica (Video Game)
Guitar Hero is hard enough. But the Metallica version makes the game ridiculous for me to play. I just can't do the guitar to a metal band. But, the vocals to the songs are awesome!! Eventhough I can't sing.

So you may wonder why I got the game if I can't play the guitar or sing. Because Metallica absolutely rocked back in the day. All the songs are here. The only one I thought was missing (and it still might be unlockable) is Breadfan.

I completely recommend the game. Luckily, I had a friend that could do the guitar part and the game kicked butt. This version killed the Aerosmith version.

5.0 out of 5 stars Better than expected, March 31, 2009
= Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: Guitar Hero Metallica (Video Game)
After playing World Tour, I was a little nervous to play this one.. I didn't enjoy the World Tour experience, but this one is different, much different. Once you fire up the career mode for the first time, you'll understand. This game has had a lot of love put into it, and it shows, from the motion capture on the characters to the Metallifacts, and especially the song selection.

Playing as Metallica is an awesome feeling when you hear the sounds of For Whom the Bell Tolls blaring out of your speakers. The track list, as I mentioned, is amazing.. out of the 49 there might be 2 or 3 that aren't much fun to play on guitar, but everything else is very solid, and very fun. The drums are a lot better in this one also, no longer are you riding the high hat 98% of the song.. there is variations, and it makes it a lot more enjoyable. Vocals have improved as well, they followed the way of Rock Band on them, and now you are graded in phrases, which makes it a lot easier for a vocalist to gauge their singing.

Overall, great addition to the Guitar Hero franchise, one that shouldn't be missed. If you are a fan of Metallica, this is a no brainer, but if you aren't, take my word for it, if you like Guitar Hero or Rock Band, you won't be disappointed.. song for song.. this is how you should be jamming on a plastic instrument.

4.0 out of 5 stars Best Guitar Hero game I've played., July 30, 2009

After having such a bad taste left in my mouth from Guitar Hero 3's insane boss battle with Lou and the overall cheesiness of the game, I hadn't bought another GH game since. On top of this after renting and playing the obviously rushed Guitar Hero Aerosmith, I saw no reason to buy them anymore but instead rent and beat them. I was sort of satisfied with World Tour, but not enough to warrant a purchase at the full price. Then GH:Metalica was released and I must say that after renting it multiple times, this is possibly the best GH game to date. (Not including Guitar Hero Smash Hits since I haven't played it).

Unlike GH:Aerosmith, this game seems to have undergone a complete makeover, the venues are completely different instead of trying to disguise the same venues from GHIII. The graphics and animations also seem to be a little better from the venues themselves to the actual band players themselves. Metallica also look like their real life counterparts.

The biggest improvement in the game is what they done with the songs. Every song in the game has an option that allows you to watch it played by a CPU controlled band while the screen displays interesting facts about the song. This is great if you just want to hear a song instead of having to play it all the time; and of course the facts are fun as well. While this is completely subjective, I think the set list of GH:Metallica is the best among all of the GH games and even better than the set lists of both Rock Band games. Of course this game is not all Metallica songs as some still seem to think, but instead, about half of the games songs are by Metallica and the other half are from other bands that Metallica has been influenced by or otherwise have some sort of connection to.

The great thing about this game is that there are no Boss Battles at all. While World Tour greatly improved the Boss Battles by getting rid of the lame and cheap power ups, Boss battles are completely absent in GH:Metallica. Even if GH:Metalica had world tour type boss battles, it STILL would be much better than what we had to put with in GHIII.

I'm able to beat most songs on Expert but decided to start career mode on the Hard Difficulty since I just had this for a week. Difficulty wise, I find the the set list as a whole is "easier" than GHIII however strangely enough, there are still two songs I haven't been able to beat on Hard. "Disposable Heroes" and "Fight Fire with Fire". I'm came very to beating "Disposable Heroes" and should eventually beat it, but "Fight Fire with Fire" will probably end up being a TTFAF type song that I will NEVER beat, so there is no reason in me in trying anymore. The good thing about this game however is if you decide to start on expert or hard difficulty and find that you are unable to beat a song, you can change the difficulty mid career and still advance without having to start all over. It does nothing to your ego knowing that you were unable to beat a song on your original difficulty level, but its still good you can advance and unlock more songs and of course you can come back and try your luck with the failed songs later on.

One reason I think songs seem "easier" is that the note tracks are done better. I shared a common complaint with GHIII that the harder levels where just full of needless power chords making the song be harder than it really should be. In GH:Metallica harder songs are genuinely hard and don't need to be bombarded with chords all over the place. There are a few songs that still suffer from this flaw, but for the most part the note tracks are playable and make sense.

I haven't actually bought this game either and my review is based on multiple rentals, but if I were to purchase another GH game, GH:Metallica will be it. Unlike GH:Aerosmith, it's a brand new and COMPLETE game. Personally, I'm waiting for the price to come down a bit more before considering a purchase, however I see no problem with the current price tag; I think its still worth the price.

5.0 out of 5 stars FINALLY, ANOTHER DECENT GUITAR HERO GAME!!, April 30, 2009
= Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: Guitar Hero Metallica (Video Game)
Thank you Red Octane and Activision for finally returning to the days when Guitar Hero was good. After the last crap like the absolutely miserable to play Guitar Hero III and the crappy Guitar Hero Aerosmith, they finally bring out a game that is FUN!
The song selection is awesome (although there are quite a few tracks that should be there, but are not). The addition of beginner mode is cool for little ones that love the music but can't quite grasp the aspects of easy mode and it's Metallica!
I wouldn't have minded seeing St. Anger on it (the song). It would have been nice to have some more of the obscure songs from the Black Album, like "Of Wolf and Man" and "Don't Tread On Me". And, where is "The Four Horsemen"?????

Other than that, its perfect!!
