5.0 out of 5 stars Old Songs with New Gameplay!, June 22, 2009

For those who are skeptical because you have played these songs before need to know that the gameplay is new for all songs. In career, you only need to play a select number of songs to unlock the next section, so at first I was only playing songs from the older games that I haven't played in a long time and skipping songs that are available on current games such as Guitar Hero World Tour and Rock Band 2. To my surprise when I did finally play those songs that the fingerings for guitar/bass are different. They didn't just take the current guitar gameplay and plop it into this game. Instead, they have updated the gameplay to not only have different fingerings (that in my opinion are mostly a vast improvement over the previous versions of these songs) but they also incorporate the newest styles of gameplay, such as three string chords & the three string hammer-on chords that we saw with the latest versions of guitar rhythm games. It makes all of these previously released songs fresh, new, and fun to play. Also, all the original artists are here, so all the cover songs from past games now have the original artists.

Being able to play drums and sing was enough to make me want to get this previously released material, but having new guitar fingerings for all these songs was a bonus I didn't expect. You also get all the online options from the currently released rhythm games.

I highly recommend this.

4.0 out of 5 stars Smash Hits Great for Older Rockers, March 12, 2010

I saw my kids playing the Guitar Hero games and recognized many of the songs included. Once I learned to play the game myself I started getting the games for the classic rock songs they contained. I bought Smash Hits to take to a party with some of our friends because it had the most recognizable songs from my generation. After one of my friends got the hang of the guitar controller, he was into it. Playing along with songs like "Smoke On the Water" and "I Love Rock 'N' Roll" brought back memories of the days when we could only play along on our "air" guitars. Loads of fun!

5.0 out of 5 stars I WANNA ROCK!!!!!, June 21, 2009
= Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: Guitar Hero Smash Hits (Video Game)
Just finished playing through all the songs on the game and have to say it is great fun! The songs selection rocks for the most part (rather would have had 'infected' on here than 'hey man nice shot'). Also note worthy is that all the songs are available from the get go without any codes!!
It really is the most polished guitar hero game yet; all the parts of the band play well and pretty much as they should with no frustrations; however I seem to get heavy feedback on vocals where my friends don't.
Simply too much fun.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very simply awesome, February 12, 2010

This review is from: Guitar Hero Smash Hits (Video Game)
This game rocks flat out. If you're a die hard Guitar Hero fan, it's kind of disappointing to not see every song you want on one disc (which I hope they will do one day..), BUT, this game is as close as it's been for me. Awesome game, with lots of songs, and it stirs up the songs notes arrangements which adds flavor to old licks. This game is very very fun, must have for the music genre in gaming.

4.0 out of 5 stars The perfect end to the Guitar Hero-series, September 24, 2010
By

This review is from: Guitar Hero Smash Hits (Video Game)
If you're new to the world of music rhythm games, there are only two Guitar Hero-games you'll ever need. The first is Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock, which is what anyone ought to begin with; great music, awesome career, wonderful difficulty progression for learners, cool cameos. This is the other one, Guitar Hero: Smash Hits (or Guitar Hero: Greatest Hits as it's known in Europe). This is a combination of most, if not all, of the best songs from the first three Guitar Hero games (plus a little bit of Guitar Hero Aerosmith), they're all original master recordings, and can all be played alone (on an instrument of your choice) or with a (total of a) four player band; a guitarist, a bassist, a drummer and a vocalist.

This is a great rock music game, there are some really classic songs and heavy hitters in here. From Heart, Aerosmith and Ozzy Osbourne through to Lynyrd Skynyrd, Slayer, Pantera, Rage Against The Machine and DragonForce. All the advancements of the series as a whole (slider notes, open bass notes, character customization, the latest graphics engine) combined with the sum total of the good that was once Guitar Hero: the music. Right after the first three games, the series took a steep plunge in my opinion, and this is the last chance to have some true rock and roll fun with your friends.

So, to summarize; if you're looking for Guitar Hero-fun on your own, get Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock. If you want your friends to join you in a band, get this game. If you're looking for a truly challenging, rewarding and immersive music ("game") experience, get Rock Band 3, pack it with DLC, borrow and export the songs from the first two games onto it. And finally, if you happen to be a fan of those particular bands, check out Guitar Hero Aerosmith, Guitar Hero Metallica, Guitar Hero: Van Halen or (the one I'd recommend in particular) The Beatles: Rock Band. The rest, when it comes down to it, is just filler.

I bought this game to use with my Band Hero bundle because the songs on Band Hero were getting kind of old. This game rocks and I love all the hits. Highly recommended!

5.0 out of 5 stars Nice addition for your GH collection, October 19, 2010
= Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: Guitar Hero Smash Hits (Video Game)
Really nice selection of songs mixed from earlier versions of the GH series. However, the most critical upgrade is that all these songs are based on the original artists master tracks, as opposed to earlier GH games in which some of the songs were based on cover band renditions.
It's got your typical GH gameplay with lots of fun songs to jam along to. I highly recommend this!
