Not the best, not the worst either......,

I ended up getting this game free with the Guitar Hero 5 deal as many others did. I understand the acrimony between the group and Sammy Hagar but the sad reality is that the newest VH song on the game is from 1984 (the year and album). This really cuts short the amount of songs that COULD have been represented. It would have been nice to see both lineups of the band get equal representation - especially since I have been dying to play "Humans Being" on GH. Once again, the pettiness and drama between current and former VH members screws the fans and we don't get the best product that we could have. They could have at least given us some live songs, demos, or new tracks to spice the game up a little bit. The extra acts are a little confusing, albeit some of the songs, particularly Judas Priest's "Painkiller" and Queen's "I Want It All" are very enjoyable but there's not much from VH's contemporaries. The presentation is lacking - the group doesn't show much life on the game except for when they go 'retro'. I wish the whole game was playable as retro Halen but alas this is not so. Also, the charting on medium mode is terrible. I am usually a strict medium player but I have to play Hard on this game to even get a challenge - the songs were too easy to play and betray the intricacy and skill of Eddie's playing. The only real songs that were enjoyable and difficult on medium were "Little Guitars" and the EVH solo songs. There also is NO storyline to speak of - in GH Aerosmith you worked your way up and got little anecdotes from band members as you progressed. This would have been much appreciated but no effort was put on that end. If not for the enjoyment of playing classic VH songs, I would've ranked this at the lower end of GH games.

My son really wanted this for Christmas.
He like to do GH with the PS2 controller but unlike other GH games, this one wont let you use the controller. Had I known this, I would not have bought it.

This game freezes. Have tried thier diagnosis tool, and still freezes to the point that we have not been able to play at all. We do not have the fat PS2, we have the slimline. Also, we have all the other Guitar Hero games and they do work fine. We returned one, and amazon replaced it and this one also will not load. Obviously not our console, since all our other games work.

I grew up loving Van Halen for all they were, so naturally, I should be ecstatic about a Guitar Hero Van Halen game, but alas, the end result is a big disappointment. Boasting generic looking venues and simply not enough material, Guitar Hero Van Halen features a decent enough helping of David Lee Roth-era tracks to play, as well as some of Eddie Van Halen's most memorable guitar solo work. That in itself is reason for celebration, but the total package of the game just feels like a rushed cash-in. Though I was never a big fan of the Sammy Hagar era, his time with Van Halen was prolific enough to warrant some consideration. Whether his lack of inclusion was Eddie's call or Activision is unknown to me (where as thanks to the previous reviewer the absence of Michael Anthony has been cleared up, thank you), he regardless deserved to have at least a few tracks from his time with the band featured here. The extra bonus act tracks however just feel like they were slapped in here just because, and have little to nothing to do with Van Halen or what they meant to generation after generation of rockers and rock fans. Where as the bonus acts on Guitar Hero Metallica made sense, something just doesn't seem right about having Blink 182 featured as a bonus with Van Halen. All in all, for Guitar Hero junkies and Van Halen fans alike, Guitar Hero Van Halen is worth checking out at the very least, but other than that, there isn't anything here to hold your interest for long.

Fun for everyone, from the amateur gamer to the extreme gaming nerd, this game brings hours of fun. Play solo, co-op, or battle it out. Van Halen is sure to have a song that you were caught singing in your shower, or jammin out to in your car.

This game is an cool game. It has the best graphics for guitar hero but when you use it on a fat Playstation 2 it sometimes frezzes. To fix this just see the reviews on Guitar Hero world tour. Also there are some video gliches on the preformance but they are mild. Other than that it is an awsome guitar hero game. This is also the last guitar hero for the Playstation 2. Get it whail its new.

Best Guitar Hero Installment Yet!,

This is by far the best Guitar hero installment yet! Guitar hero is all about the guitar and this is what real guitar playing sounds like. Eddie's licks are extremely fun to play and they simply blow away all those "filler" songs they put on all the other guitar hero titles (most of which don't have any creative guitar in them at all.) The only Van Halen I consider to be the real deal is the original Van Halen from the 70's and 80's, so I didn't really care whether the "van hagar" songs were included or not. This game is extremely fun and addictive without them and well worth the money!...Hoping for a "Rush" guitar hero soon.

We like the game. We received it in time for Christmas but we really wish it had more of Van Halen's songs that we recognize. It is a fun game though.
