Guitar Hero: Warriors of Rock Stand-Alone Software

I am a fan of music games. I have Guitar Hero World Tour, Metallica, 5, and Rock Band 2. I also bought Guitar Hero Smash Hits last year during Black Friday. I have played about 80 of the 90 something songs in Warriors of Rock, finished Quest Mode, and played online once.

What's Good:
-The Set List: This is entirely opinionated. If you are even considering buying this game, look up the full set list online. Personally, I think this is a great set list. It has songs I always wanted in a music game (ex. Nemesis, Burnin' for You). Beyond the songs I was excited to play from bands I either really liked (Rush, Styx, My Chemical Romance) or was at least somewhat familiar with (Queensryche, Night Ranger), the game also has songs which are funner than I expected. For instance, I originally had no expectation for Cherry Bomb, We're Not Gonna Take It, and Suffocated, but I love playing all of those songs. Overall, there are distinctly different songs which are more often than not fun to play. While there is a diverse set list, it is also more contained in the rock, alternative, metal, and punk genres (I thought GH5 was too broad).
-The Difficulty: In my opinion, the main games in the Guitar Hero series have decreased in difficulty. With Warriors of Rock, they bumped it back up. Between the Megadeth songs, Slayer, DragonForce, John 5, and Steve Vai, there are some good challenging songs. Even some of the earlier songs are hard to play like Burn and Call Me the Breeze.
-Importing Songs: Yes, there is a small fee to do this, but it is a thousand times better swapping discs or never playing songs again. You can import about half of the songs from WT and SH, about 80 songs from 5, and about 39 songs from Metallica. In fact, Activision waived the import fee for GH:M for the first week, so I didn't pay anything. If you have been a Guitar Hero fan for a few years, you probably have too many games on your shelve like me. When you import all of your games, your set list becomes impressive both in terms of bands and the scope of genres. The new features are updated automatically, so even the Death Magnetic album, which I got two years ago, has the new challenges found in Quickplay+. Speaking of which...
-Quickplay+: Remember those challenges from GH5? Remember the leveling system from GHWT? Those are combined together in the new quickplay mode. You can keep track of how good (or how bad) you are on a song easily. You can still save playlists and sort songs like in 5.

What's Not So Good/Bad:
-Some songs don't belong in a Guitar Hero game. Personally, I think Bohemian Rhapsody is one of the greatest songs ever written, but it should belong in Rock Band 3 and not WOR, since it has an actual keyboard. Instead you play the piano part with a guitar. Also, I really like Seven Nation Army and Uprising, but they aren't the most exciting song to play on guitar. Instead of making them the easiest songs in the game though, they charted the bass section too [QUICK EDIT: So apparently White Strips don't have a bassist, so you are actually playing the guitar part in the game, but you can still play as a bass guitarist in the game, so the same problem still exists]. I don't care if a chart is 100% accurate and I don't mind playing some synthesizer keyboard parts in songs, but it is a little distracting in this game.
-Quest Mode: I don't know why Acitivision and Neversoft hyped this at all. Quest Mode barely has a story. There are no over-the-top/epic rock moments. Instead we get bands playing at venues (just like every other game) who randomly transform into a monster. The transformations and power-ups are unnecessary, and make the game too easy. It is possible to have star power on, with a 36x multiplier for an entire song. However, you don't earn points in this mode. Instead you can earn up to 40 (yes 40) stars. The only cool moments in Quest Mode are 2112 and fighting The Beast. I doubt anybody is dying to play through Quest Mode, but just so you know, there is absolutely nothing to talk about. Personally, I would skip Quest Mode, except...
-Some songs are locked: Yeah. The last tier (the hardest songs in the game) is locked, so you have to play through Quest Mode in order to play every song. I believe you have to do this to unlock 2112 as well. You will only have to endure this once, and if you are experienced at Guitar Hero or Rock Band it should only take you about 6 hours to reach the end. Still, was a little annoying I could play Black Widow of La Porte when I first got the game. Oh well.

Bottom Line:
If you are not bored with Guitar Hero, then you should have some fun with this game. I picked this game over Rock Band 3 because I like this set list more, there is a lot of crossover with previous Guitar Hero games (RB3 has songs from GH 1, 2, 3, WT, 5, and WOR), and I don't want to budget for completely new instruments right now. So basically I picked this game, because I thought WOR has fun songs and on that front the game has delivered.

If you are just now thinking about playing a music game, pick up an earlier game (either GH5, Metallica, or RB2. I wouldn't go much earlier than that), since they are finally coming down in price.

QUICK EDIT (10/17/10):

Although I still believe the powers in Quest Mode don't add much to the game, I do have to admit something. In Quickplay+, you can select 2 powers out of the 8 in the game. The game doesn't save your score, so you don't have to worry about beating people who somehow got 2 million points on a song (you still see your score, but it only saves the stars you received). Overall, I think using power-ups in Quickplay+ is fun. Since you are able to pick which powers you use, it is better than Quest Mode, which either assigns random powers based on the rocker's set list, or you play with 4 or 8 powers which makes the game too easy. With that in mind, the powers still don't add anything new to the gameplay. They are simply a new gameplay mode. If anything, this only reinforces how fun Quickplay+ is.

Yeah, it's a little early, but I've played this game for a few hours now and love it. It has great features, graphics, multiplayer etc. The "warrior" add-on is really cool and looks pretty bad-ass overall. This is not a game for your 8-year-old however, it does have some suggestive songs and themes. It comes jam-packed with amazing songs like Money for Nothing, Uprising, Love Gun, Been Caught Stealing, Bat Country, Bohemian Rhapsody, and Savior. Overall, I'd recommend it to anyone looking for a fun time alone, at a party, or with family.

this guitar hero game doesn't let you play with the xbox360 controller. you have to use the guitar now. im used to playing with the controller.why guitar hero why!

With an amazing tracklist, including gems such as Rush's 2112 narrated by the band members themselves; an epic, if not slightly cheesy and completely over-the-top story mode; along with hundreds of instrument-specific challenges for each song on disc along with downloaded songs, this game works out to be the best Guitar Hero title to date. Amazing fun for the guitarist, and great all around for everyone else. Additionally, most of the tracks (including all tracks by Metallica) export off of your Guitar Hero Metallica disc, and the vocals work much better than in previous installments. I found that vocals were near impossible on Guitar Hero 5, but they work great here.

Definitely recommended for fans of the rhythm game genre.

I am a big fan o Guitar Hero, and I can tell, this is the best GH ever made. I'm so happy with this game, excellent graphics, a pretty good setlist, full of rock n' roll. Buy it, you won't regret.

First off, I'd like to recommend that you buy this game online! Almost every store I've been to, this game costs at least $40. And it's already been out for a year. Anyway, this game is a lot of fun for all the music rhythm games. I play it all the time and never get tired of it. There's something for almost everyone on the setlist. The Quest mode also takes a huge step in a right direction, though at times it can be cheesy. It's a shame that the GH series is on an indefinite hiatus, but if you wanna was your troubles away, or just take out your anger, nothing is better than playing along to any of the songs this game has to offer.

This is the best guitar hero yet! (in my opinion). The songs are great and the story actually makes sense. Some of the songs are easy, some provide a challenge, and others just seem impossible. The Rocker creator has been improved, with more outfits, facepaints, and proportions all the way down to painted fingernails. The guitars are awesome, featuring the B.C. Rich, and Schecter brands just to name two. The GH mix is back as well, providing more accurate note mapping. And finally, the graphics and the artwork has come along way from the infamous GH3 drummer, to more fluid body movements and facial expressions. 5 out of 5 stars for me :p

I haven't played many of the Guitar Hero or Rock Band games on the Xbox 360, having played many of them on PS2. While the series is rapidly becoming dated, I still found WoR to be fun. I initially bought it for two reasons: 1. To complete come closer to completing my collection on Xbox, and 2. To play one of the downloadable tracks, Na Na Na by My Chemical Romance.

The graphics were great, though, again, this is coming from someone that mainly played the games on PS2 originally, so I'm not too used to playing them on next-gen.

The track list was great, but the play does get old rapidly. Mainly, this game, as well as the others in the series, are great for groups, but get very boring when playing solo.

I can only review Warrior of Rock without pointing out what make it different from the others since I only got this one (although i do have the Rock Band games).

Warriors of Rock can be described as a good time. You have party mode which goes on & on. We also got Quick play which can be put into a set list, or infinite random songs which I love. The Quest mode is pretty cool & has elements of fantasy & science fiction. I really like the whole man becoming beast-like rock heroes (although I kind of wish that I could use my own characters in it, it's all cool since I can still use them in Quick play & Party mode).

Since I do not play Multi player, I'm not sure what to say about it but I'm pretty sure it's cool. I think you can play ALL the modes above in it.

Besides the Quest Mode in Guitar Hero, I'm on a Quest of my own. I have been spreading the word on requesting various Japanese artists to be on both Guitar Hero & Rock Band (Harmonix has shown a big interest in adding Japanese artists to Rock Band!). I know they are people out there that do not care for Japanese music or anything in a different langauges. But for the guys like me who grew up listening to Japanese music & buying & purchasing it from both American & Japan, it whould be a dream come true to play those songs. On Guitar Hero.com, you can find the "Request A Song" option by going to the Music option & searching for a song that can't be fund on the site which will pop up the "Request A Song" option on the top of the page. At Rock Band.com, look under Help at the bottom of the screen to find the "Request A Song" option or go to the Songs section and find it on the right side of the screen, you can also find it on Rock Band.com by searching for a song they can't be fund I think.

The more requests & the more people told, the better. I request once a week & sometimes more then that. Some of the artists I request are Gackt, L'Arc en Ciel, the Gazette, Girugamesh, Dir en grey, X Japan (their I.V is already featured for Rock Band 2 as a free download!), Mucc, High & Mighty Color & much more! As far as langauge barriars are concerned, I pay no mind to that since they are some Rock Band & Guitar Hero songs in other langauges anyway.

this game rocks!!! this game is packed with songs and the whole game has a ultra polished feel to it. i enjoyed the (corny) storyline to the quest mode as it compelled me to keep playing the game to see what comes next. once again the production really shines here. if you like rock band or guitar hero, and you dont have this game, what are you waiting for???
