4.0 out of 5 stars Good Review from a Rock Band fan
I choose to get the gh:wt guitar bundle over the bandkit for 2 reasons; 1) I heard the gh: world tour drums were having lots of issues and 2) I already owned Rock Band 1 band kit with guitar, drums, and mic.

Pros:

- Rock Band 1 drums works seemlessly with gh: wt
- Rock Band 1 guitar & mic works seemlessly with gh: wt as well
- Well...

4.0 out of 5 stars Good Review from a Rock Band fan, November 6, 2008
= Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: PS3 Guitar Hero World Tour Guitar Kit (Accessory)
I choose to get the gh:wt guitar bundle over the bandkit for 2 reasons; 1) I heard the gh: world tour drums were having lots of issues and 2) I already owned Rock Band 1 band kit with guitar, drums, and mic.

Pros:

- Rock Band 1 drums works seemlessly with gh: wt
- Rock Band 1 guitar & mic works seemlessly with gh: wt as well
- Well polished gameplay with a great song list! IMO better than rock band 2 b/c i am not a huge metal rock fan. GHero has more titles like sublime, micheal jackson, eagles, no doubt. A little more mainstream.

Cons:
- I truely dislike how if one band member fails out the whole band fails out. When friends are over just having fun learning a new instrument this is very annoying that you can't "save" them like in rock band.

- I also dislike the way you have to trigger star power on drums( by hitting both center drum pads at the same time) During the middle of a fast paced song on medium or hard this will certainly screw you up and I can almost never pull it off flawlessly) Rock band again gets props for adding short fills and landing the the last note to trigger star power!

- not a huge fan of encores....after playing 4 longs songs i dont want an encore

Overall, feels very similar to rock band with slightly different animations and gameplay with all new songs. Definitely has been working great and a good choice if you like the song list however, if not I would stick with Rock Band 2...especially if you need a drum set.

UPDATE
After having the game for about 2 months along with RockBand 2 now. I'd have to say that time and time again i go back to play RockBand 2 instead of GH:WT. The reason is b/c i usually play when friends come over and we want the ability to play and pick from the most amount of songs. Since RB2 allows you to play all your RB1 songs as well as your RB2 songs it truly has more than twice the number of songs than GH:WT. Not to mention, RB2 has really polished how to search for songs to play...not only by song tile, artist, and difficulty but now you can search for songs by Genre and Decade as well. Makes life very easy when your in the mood to play a paticular song. While GW:WT is a fine game and works as advertised. RockBand2 wins Round 1!!

UPDATE
Also Rock Band 2 has psn trophies to obtain while GH:WT does not!

5.0 out of 5 stars Another Great Guitar Hero Game, October 28, 2008
= Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: PS3 Guitar Hero World Tour Guitar Kit (Accessory)
I purchased the guitar pack for this game, because I thought the new features on the controller would be fun. I was right! The controller allows you to try some new techniques that make the game just that much more interesting. I didn't purchase the drums/mic full kit because we tried that with Rock Band and no one in my family really seemed to like those features so much.

As far as the play list, I was delighted to find so much newer music, as well as some amazing classics. Normally we start this game on medium, but it was way too easy on that level (maybe we are just becoming so experienced, lol). On the other hand, when I switched to hard, I was surprised to find how challenging it was, especially with the new controller and added techniques. I love the new guitar battles, which are not really battles at all. It is so much fun to play along with the likes of Ted Nugent and the other guitar gods.

All in all this game continues to amaze me. I note that you can add your own music, but I haven't tried that yet. We are just having way too much fun playing through the 80 or so songs provided with this game.

4.0 out of 5 stars "Deja Vu", but different..., October 27, 2008

Initially here are the things that strike me about the hardware.
The PS3 guitar despite the necessary DONGLE will not work with old PS2 GH games (GH1&II&80s.etc) on my 60gb nor does it work on my PS2,(bummer but not surprising, considering the upgrades. The guitar and its improvements are noticable immediately however. The length is a nice upgrade, and the new dpad knob is cool after you get the hang of it, also the bigger, clickier strum bar feels great, now when you are dropping notes you can be sure it is you that is to blame, not the hardware or wireless setup. The two start buttons and oversized SELECT button however are at a spot where I on occassion pause by accident triggering the games new 4 sec restart from pause upgrade. The touch pad felt okay at first as a strum bar, but has begun to show crosstalk in the music studio when I play drums with it, also it is way to far up on the neck and can be hard to locate in the heat of play. Other gripes are that I feel like I have nowhere to spend my tour cash in the game as there are no unlockable songs (just new sets) to buy.
I would have rather seen a new harder lever rather than the new BEGINNER mode but this should help even more people get the hang of these games.
I also miss the tour for each level of difficulty, now when you finish a song on any setting its finished even if you switch difficulties. The customization, along with alot of the details here really feel lifted from RB, but the customization is also fairly limited as the FACE really doesn't change much. Instrument customization is terrific however with every aspect fret board, inlay, pickups adjustable. The music selection is very eclectic with a few too many modern bands for my taste but there are many, many choice tracks, inlcuding the TOOL level which is the most amazing 3 song set yet in a RHYTHM game with Alex Grey inspired art as a stage and no musicians insight. The music studio features a nice set of tutorials to lead you into making your own GH tracks, and overall is fairly deep with 2 methods of making recordings(mixer/studio) and alot of effects for the instrument(s), with more unlockable through codes. The guitar makes a surprisingly good controller for navigating the music studio and the touch pad is promising as a music creation tool, but feels a little imprecise as a drumpad, During gameplay the touchpad requires a light touch as well to avoid crosstalk between notes when tapping, and a nice light touch when sliding over the new see-through notes (which remind me of GITAROO MAN but more hands on). On the hard levels the touch pad is almost impossible to reach at times however (Zak Wylde duel). Overall, it is hard to complain about a song list this huge, the ability to record your own tunes, a bass career, and a guitar with this many improvements. I do however miss some of the old features like a locally available HIGH SCORES table, not just online & not just by song. The career sets feel packed together but you can quit through the pause menu and still play one song at a time, or build your own sets of any length. I was hoping for 1080p graphics, but this is yet another 720p PS3 game. Online, drums, vocals are NOT REVIEWED here.
This is my initial reaction to the single player guitar bundle for offline play only, and I thought it might help some of you make a rhythm game buying decision. Also see line6.com/gh for the extra guitar effects that are unlockable in the studio.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great game design, game play, and some great songs, December 11, 2008
= Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: PS3 Guitar Hero World Tour Guitar Kit (Accessory)
This is actually the first Guitar Hero game I have ever played, so I can't compare the game to the previous versions. As far as the hardware, the wireless guitar that comes with this kit works well and I've never had it mess up on me yet. It seems very responsive and is built well enough that I can jam on it without thinking it will break. As for the game itself... it's really addictive and has some great songs that are done really well. What I mean is, the button fret combinations are really fun to do and work with the songs. All of the songs are original recordings (as opposed to covers by other bands) and some of my favorites include Hotel California, La Bamba, On The Road Again (live), Float on, Eye of the Tiger, and Beat it. In addition to playing the guitar and bass guitar to these songs, you can also sing (if you buy a usb mic) and play drums in this game (if you buy the drums).

I can confirm that the guitar that comes in this kit is compatible with Guitar Hero 3, and Rock Band for the PS3. So more than likely it should work for Rock Band 2 as well.

Conclusion:

I've had lots of fun with this game so far and it's very hard to put down once you get started. The game design is great because it lets you pick from lots of different modes like "quick play" and "career mode". And even within career mode, there's even an option to pick the song list you want to play in a set for a show. The only thing I wish they would've done is throw in a free mic with this kit so you could try the singing option right away. But with that said, I'm really happy with this game.

3.0 out of 5 stars Issues with Instruments and Gameplay, February 22, 2009
= Fun:3.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: PS3 Guitar Hero World Tour Guitar Kit (Accessory)
We have all the iterations of Guitar Hero and Rock Band, as well as some karaoke games. We are both musicians. Here's our review of World Tour after playing it for four months and giving it a thorough workout.

First, I'll note that I am reviewing the equipment SEPARATELY since many people are using this game with equipment they already have. With that comment, I'll caveat that part of why we waited 4 months to do a review is because of HORRENDOUS repeated problems with the drums.

So, on to the game. The makers of Rock Band and Guitar Hero are in essence "dueling" and each coming out with a new game one after the other, borrowing improvements from each other. This latest version of Guitar Hero improves the facial graphics a bit, lets you play stars for star power even if you're already activated, has the audience singing along with you, and has a HUGE amount of character customization available.

The game is organized in locations, represented by walls with posters of set-lists on them. If you play all of the posters on a given wall, you unlock special goodies. Some of the gigs require a cash deposit, encouraging you to play other songs to rack up your bank account.

There are some simple tutorials, a custom song-making utility, and the usual combination of quick-play and career mode.

I always enter each new game with an open mind, and part of why we play these for so long before reviewing them is to ensure we don't down-rate one game just because we'd been playing the other one non-stop for 8 weeks straight previously. Still, here it really did not help.

While I like the bonuses for group effort, the whole setup for group play really bothers us. Star power only applies to the person who activates it. This means one person can "steal" all the star power, which does not make for band harmony. Also, it means one person can't "save" another person! If the drummer is having all sorts of trouble, HE has to somehow manage to hit the combo to activate star power to save himself. If he's in that much trouble, usually the effort will sink him into death. Also, star power keeps draining even if there are long, empty stretches without notes.

Some of their "performance bonuses" are questionable. As a guitarist I once got a Hot Start bonus (for doing well at the beginning of a song) for hitting just one note.

I still lobby for a length bar for the song, so you know how close to the end of it you are. It would be very helpful for songs you're new to.

Also, the display for how the group is doing is really awful. It is nearly impossible to look over there and see how your teammates are doing, how the group as a whole is doing, how much star power remains, or anything.

I do like the purple lines that connect sequences of notes, encouraging you to hit them all in a row. But to me that's not enough to make up for the other problems.

I'm not saying the game is awful - but I'm saying that right now on the market are two competing games - Guitar Hero World Tour and Rock Band 2. Both offer microphone, guitars and drums. Both were "launched" by the original Rock Band which was the first game to offer the guitars / singing / drums combo and break that ice. While I think Guitar Hero's franchise has made a valiant effort to enter the arena and ramp up their game to include the other instruments, I still find Rock Band 2 to be far superior in playability.

As if to solidify this, we have friends come over occasionally to play with us and usually we pull out Rock Band 1 / 2. This last time someone came over, we pulled out Guitar Hero World Tour for them to play with. Both were musicians who weren't gamers. They had an AWFUL time with this game.

If you're new to the music-gaming world, I would recommend going with Rock Band 2 over this game. Between the instrument issues and the gameplay issues, it's simply the better choice.

5.0 out of 5 stars Addictive, November 24, 2008
= Fun:4.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: PS3 Guitar Hero World Tour Guitar Kit (Accessory)
Pros: Song list is massive, about as big as the normal song list combined with the bonus song list of GH3. The songs aren't as frustrating as they were in GH3. You can create your own songs. Songs are set to gradually get harder, instead of sticking a really tough song in a gig like it was in GH3. You can customize your own Guitar Hero's appearance, as well as customize the instruments. Slider bar can be tapped to play notes instead of using the strum bar.

Cons: The new guitar takes up a USB slot. The Slider Bar is too sensitive. Hammer Ons and Pull Offs require different mechanical timing than GH3, and is often counter intuitive on some songs. The guitar strum bar is loud; it makes an awful clicking noise every time you play a note with it. The Slider Bar isn't utilized enough, and can't be used when recording your own songs. Sometimes the guitar controller doesn't register correctly, and you miss notes that you played correctly.

Overall, this game is better than GH3. It seems a lot easier than GH3, but there are songs in the list that will challenge you. I can't wait to get the rest of the instrument controllers, and do the careers for them.

4.0 out of 5 stars Song selection could have been better, November 17, 2008
= Fun:4.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: PS3 Guitar Hero World Tour Guitar Kit (Accessory)
I played GH3 and GH:aerosmith. Those were great games. World tour is a great game but the songs are not that fun to play. I think after playing thru the game i like about 20-25 songs out of the 85. I only bought the guitar kit tho so im sure the drums will be fun to play, which i will be getting in the future and i could really careless about the mic.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Game, monster track list, leap forward from Legends of Rock, October 26, 2008
= Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: PS3 Guitar Hero World Tour Guitar Kit (Accessory)
I purchased the full band kit as soon as I could the day of release because I do not have another singing nor drumming game already, and I purchased this game to fulfill my curiosity of this genre of game, and I am satisfied. As for purchasing just the Guitar/game kit, there is little to no advantage to this controller over the Les Paul for an average player like me. For an advanced player, this new controller allows you to tap through areas where hammer-ons and pull-offs are, and also to bend the notes where long notes are instead of using the whamy bar. If you do not care about the new singing and drums, or already have peripheral mics and drums, and have 1-2 guitars, then this guitar bundle is not necessary. Just purchase the game separately. If you are an advanced player and must have the newest technology, this will definately put a new twist on how you play this game. There are 80+ songs to go through in this game, and the guitar challenges are not battles anymore with the "Guitar Legends", a nice twist to just allow you to play. And the recording studio is an excellent feature once you get done playing all the other music, make and play your own (a first for this type of game, although Rock Revolution tried). The game is a definate must for fans of Guitar Hero, and an excellent way to introduce a new person to the GH series.
