Biography

Almost immediately after guitarist/vocalist John Cephas joined forces with harmonicist/vocalist Phil Wiggins in 1978, the blues community took them to heart. Critics and fans proclaimed them as the new champions of the East Coast Piedmont style of blues, a style of music first popularized by artists like Blind Boy Fuller, Rev. Gary Davis, Blind Willie McTell and Blind Blake. They have performed… Read more in Amazon's Cephas & Wiggins Store

Editorial Reviews

From Grove Press Guide to Blues on CD

Cephas is even more wondrous here than on the Washingtonian's earlier album. Through voice and guitar he commandingly brings the songs of Blind Blake, Furry Lewis, and Blind Boy Fuller into the present. Wiggins turns in a winning, work- manly performance. Their music is sunshine flashing off wet mountain foliage at the break of dawn. -- © Frank John Hadley 1993

4.0 out of 5 stars See 'em live if you can. But if you can't, buy this CD., March 14, 2005

This review is from: Guitar Man (Audio CD)
I saw them in a tiny theater in southeast Kentucky. Don't ask why, just the luck of the draw. Their playing wasn't a performance. It was a celebration of music they live and breathe and love. They also clearly have a commanding respect and affection for one another. Each one anticipates the other without feeling rehearsed, just locked into the other's heart.

Does this CD relive their live presence? Sadly, I'm not sure any recording can. How could you see the sly smile John Cephas flashes Phil Wiggins after he blasts a particularly hot harmonica solo? Well, you can't. But you do get all the notes played here. And that's something.
