5.0 out of 5 stars Curt Mitchell Instructional Videos
I purchased this video. I enjoy comparing phase composition by other players, to my interpretations of various "riffs". I have been playing guitar for about thirty years now, and have handled the leadwork in a few bands that played some of the songs addressed by Mitchell here. I really enjoyed the video, and was impressed by Mitchell's teaching skill.

1.0 out of 5 stars Eric where are you?
This guy obviously made the video in his basement. I spent 20 bucks on this that I might as well have burnt. This Curt character teaches scales wrong, riffs wrong, and the tablature that comes with the video is photo copied out of some guys scrap book and is illegable as well as not in proper format. Please shoot me.

1.0 out of 5 stars I paid $ for this? 'Definitely not for beginners', July 11, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Guitar Method: Eric Clapton [VHS] (VHS Tape)
First off, I bought my first guitar today and decided to spend some dough on some books and videos, locally I found this non-gem, yeah the picture quality reminds me of cable access stations, looks like there was no budget for this, absolutely terrible production values. Proof? Looks like it's an EP recording, but it is in SP.

Being truly guitar ignorant this video did almost nothing for me, he plays the piece once normal then they give a semi-close up and you can't tell what he's doing really unless you are already a very good guitarist and then I figure you wouldn't buy this tape anyho....

I had read interviews on this chap's videos and didn't want one of his, the box didn't indicate who was doing the instruction... and being curious about Clapton (fatal error) I bought it.

I didn't find any other suitable videos locally but I did snag some decent books and a teaching CD that are hopefully 5 million times more helpful to a total beginner such as myself then this BAD video.

1 star is pushing it even!

1.0 out of 5 stars home made, poorly thought out,off the top of his head video, June 25, 1999
By
This review is from: Guitar Method: Eric Clapton [VHS] (VHS Tape)
Even though there are already some poor reviews of this video I had to add mine. First of all, unless you have the recordings of each of the songs, the "riffs" he tries to teach are meaningless. Curt tends to talk off the top of his head and much of what he talks about is supercilious remarks that take up too much time. The tabs are hand written and the cover looks like it was done on a home computer, and badly (too many different fonts on the cover, a big no-no in desktop publishing). Save your money! Actually, minus 1 star is more accurate. Nothing to learn from this one...

1.0 out of 5 stars Terrible. The tablature is handwritten and unreadable., April 1, 1999

Terrible. The tablature is handwritten and unreadable. For lesser money you can get a proper tablature book. The Pink Floyd video is also very bad. The tablatures are so small thay you cant make out what the Guy is playing. I wish I could return them.

1.0 out of 5 stars Disappointing..., August 6, 2001

The quality of this video is not really up to snuff for a professional tape (taped on a cheap video camera?). The content - a list of EC licks are rattled off fast with little thought for context or content. The intro. was ok - although it concentrated more on the guitarist on the tape than on E.C.. However, I did learn an alternative way to play one lick off the little paper leaflet that came with the video (the best part of the package) and which I have now lost! Not really worth the money. This would be overpriced at half the current price.

I'm sick of all the complaining about these videos. Yes, it is a low budget instructional video, but who cares? Do you need Lord of the Rings to learn Layla? If you can see the fretboard, there is something to learn.

These videos are to make good guitarists better, not to teach new players to play. I think the people complaining are people that bought this with their first guitar and expected it to be easy. Sorry, but you'll have to start with "Smoke on the Water" and "Me & Bobby McGee" like the rest of us.

Put in some time and come back to these tapes, maybe you'll get more out of them.

1.0 out of 5 stars TERRIBLE!, January 15, 1999

This video does NOT teach you what it claims it does! I was really intrigued about how this video was suppossed to teach "turnarounds & melodic comping" but to my surprise I got much more out of a $5 magazine! I've bought some Eric Clapton songbooks that are (Guitar Recorded Versions) and Curt doesn't even get Eric's riffs right! There are 5 conventional patterns to pentatonic scales; Curt says Eric only uses 3, which I know for a fact is not true! And to top it off this "wonderful" chart Curt so graciously gives you is no more than illegible handwriting on a page no bigger than a Hallmark card! Do yourself a favor and save your money!

To be able to play this kind of music requires many hours of practice at home. One must love this music to be able to spend the hours of solitary practice needed to later graduate to the level of being able to replicate the work of a Master like Clapton. This video allows folks that do not have someone to instruct them, an example to look at, while they are attempting this challenge of this music. Such a video can be a treasure to a person desperately wanting to teach themselves, but having trouble doing it. The video aid will enable the intermediate player to rise to the next level of playing exclusively by just hearing the music, which is the stage of public performance.

Mitchell's videos are simply tools to be incorporated into the instructional regiment of a student who wants to progress in the art of playing rock music. I learned a few riffs that I have never bothered to try to figure out on my own. It was a fun, and easy way of spending my practise time for a few days. He plays the riffs at normal speed, and then at a slower speed. I guess if one wanted to, one could "pause" the tape and examine his fingering in a still position. Whatever works is okay to use in this endeavor, for the rewards of playing music can greatly enhance the enjoyment of living.

DO NOT BUY THIS VIDEO. IT IS A HOME MADE VIDEO. ITS PRIMARY PURPOSE IS TO RIP YOU OFF. THE TABLATURE THAT COMES WITH THE VIDEO IS HANDWRITTEN.

5.0 out of 5 stars Insert Needed, February 28, 1999
This review is from: Guitar Method: Eric Clapton [VHS] (VHS Tape)
These tapes are great, but I lost the insert to "In The Style Of Ozzy's Hitmen" and now, except for some riffs, the tape is useless. If anyone knows where I can get a new one without buying another tape, or MVP's contact number (the number listed on the boxes is disconnected) please email me
