In The Mood for Lowe,
By Michael B. Richman (Portland, Maine USA) - See all my reviews (TOP 500 REVIEWER) (HALL OF FAME REVIEWER) (VINE VOICE) (REAL NAME)
This review is from: Guitar Moods By Mundell Lowe (Audio CD)
Those familiar with my recent jazz reviews on Amazon will know that I have picked up hunderds of remaindered Fantasy/OJC CDs over the past couple of years, primarily at Newbury Comics throughout New England. I am happy to say I have recently discovered another source for these closeouts -- the Oldies/Collectables label! The company recently advertised numerous going-OOP OJC discs in the Amazon Marketplace and on their own website, so needless to say I ordered all the titles I could. One of them was this title -- "Guitar Moods" by Mundell Lowe. This album was recorded over three dates in February and March 1956, primarily as a trio with Trigger Alpert on bass and Ed Shaughnessy on drums, but adding Al Klink on bass clarinet (track 1) and flute (4 & 9), and Phil Bodner on oboe (3) and English horn (6, 7 & 12). The result is less straightforward jazz, as on his Riverside debut Mundell Lowe Quartet (see my review), and something more akin to chamber music. "Guitar Moods" sets a wonderfully mellow mood, and if you can find this CD as inexpensively as I did, it will surely put you in a good mood too.
